Using a BB without plan - QUESTION

Please help. I can't find this answer anywhere online, or please direct me to the correct forum. I have a cell phone that I love and am in the middle of a contract. I would like to get a used BB to use as a PDA without spending $200+ for a new PDA, but do not want to upgrade my current phone or plan to include data. I just want the capabilities of a PDA. If I had a BB, would this be possible?? I'd appreciate any input!!
Thanks!

Yes. You can use PIM functions without a data plan.
You won't get any e-mail capabilities or web browsing at all.

Without a data plan all you have is Phone, SMS and PIM (sync) capabilities...

Wait ... if all you want is a PDA and not a phone, then why not just get a good PDA? There are good Palm PDA units that make excellent PDAs.

Plenty of people use BB's as a PDA. It's definitely a viable option whether you understand or not. I wouldn't rate the BB's PIM apps as good as other options but they are very reliable and durable devices.

Ya I understand that. I guess for me, I like to use the best tool for the job. And if I need a tool for PIM features, I would choose the best tool, being a full PDA.

I dont know what his needs are in a PIM, but for me, my BB works perfectly. And because it is rolled into my phone and messaging device. The BB is PERFECT!.

a touch screen is a MUST for a "PDA" . a blackberry doesn't need it, but then again it isn't really a PDA. i mean, it does fit under a personal data assistant, but it's not what i would refer to as a PDA in my opinion

I use my Pearl without a data plan and I use it for the keyboard and the extras...I used Palm's and WM but they are just getting HUGE compared to the Pearl. I needed something small that I could carry and be able to text with the keyboard. I use the Contacts, Calendar, and starting to use the tasks and by far this is the best PIM I have used. BB's are more stable to me than the Palm's and WM's. I never used them to the max like some people did but for small things the BB works great for me.

Being able to carry everything in a small package is great. The phone, text, calendar, etc. PDA's are great for what they do. I would love to get email and the web but the cost and access to me really isn't worth the extra cash. I am close to a computer 99% of the day so I can check emails and surf the web if I wanted to. I'll save the cash and use it for something else. If I get a job that would require the access to instant emails then I would pony up the money for the web/mail access

Thanks for your everyone's reply. I had a good PDA and it died. I am also a teacher and do not have $200 or more to shell out for another, (I found a good used BB around here for $50) plus I like the idea of having a keyboard, which I didn't think of earlier until I read the other replies. :-)

I appreciate everyone's opinion and time.

Thanks!
