Question Do old Emails & SMS history affect Free File Memory??

Please Login to Remove!

I have my storage option set to "Forever" to save all SMS, email and Call log entries since I bought my 8830. I was wondering if this will significantly affect Free File Memory?

Does it make sence to delete SMS texts and emails? Or do they use so little storage memory that it doesnt really matter....

Thanks!!

They take up space and eventually you're going to run out. You should leave it at the default of 30 days and backup regularly.

If you can perform regular housekeeping there's no reason to use the 30 day expiration. It's a matter of personal preference (habit?) really... It would really take a while and a LOT of messages to drastically affect the free space on your BB.

If you're worried then check your status from time to time. It doesn't hurt to be aware of how much free space you have.

Currently I have 1875 SMS messages and its only taking up .5MB...so Im not too worried about running out of space here.

Are all email attatchments downloaded and saved to the device when you open them?

Is there a way to change this option, or delete the stored attatchments?

If you clear the cache (battery pull reboot) you will clear and refresh the memory. Your attachments do not get downloaded automatically, and those you open do not remain stored on the BB UNLESS you save that document to the BB.

d5--I've read your other thread(s) and I think you are being way too anal about your memory capacity. Many have made good suggestions on how to clean up your memory,

Good luck.

New to the device, just want to get in good habits now to prevent any memory loss issues that I've read so much about.

The best habit you can form is pulling the battery to reboot about 1x week.

sigh. Being CDMA does not cause you have to have poor battery life.

How does the network cause poor battery life?

It doesn't, unless the user has a poor reception signal and the BB is continuously searching for a signal. That will kill a battery quickly.

If that is the case for this user, you need to find another carrier suitable to your geographic location and travels.

You guys are wrong.

The same phone/batter on GSM vs. CDMA will have much longer battery life on GSM. Go to blackberry.com and look at the 8830...the GSM model boasts a 22 day standby time, CDMA only 9 days.

Talk time: 300min on GSM, 220 on CDMA.

There is a huge difference is the amount of battery used between networks....it is seen on every phone that has a CDMA and GSM model.

Can anyone explain WHY this is?

It does say that, but you also need to read the fine print before you call someone incorrect. Jsanders was correct in saying that it all depends on the coverage. If you look at the bottom of the page you will see

"CDMA Battery life based on CDG 35 suburban specifications. GSM/GPRS battery life based on GSMA PRD TW.09 Battery Life Measurement Technique. Results may vary. Network availability and coverage affect battery life and are dependent upon a number of factors, including location and transmission environment."

yea but then why would they put two completely different sets of numbers if the battery life was more or less the same?

theres obviously more power used by the qualcomm chip in CDMA devices than the equivalent GSM device

From what I have heard, (and I am no expert!) CDMA does take up more battery due to being on frequency that requires more power than GSM. I have also heard that is why CDMA coverage can be better - It extends farther from the tower than GSM sinals. BUT, its not that huge of a difference and in my experience, your battery life depends on how much data you are using. My users who get mail every 5 minutes have significantly lower battery life than my users who only get mail a couple times an hour.

Then there is also how much web surfing you do - that is a battery killer and talking on the phone chews up battery life pretty well too. There are a lot of factors for battery life.

Sorry if I've missed it, but old emails do get purged when the device runs out of memory. It shouldn't stop working because you've run out.

Yeah, CDMA devices would always get less battery life than GSM under optimal network conditions. CDMA requires more communication with towers while "idle" than does GSM.
