As a new bb user, I was surprised to see there's no way to set a solid-color desktop background (not an image) out of the box.
You could make a custom solid-color image and either load that onto your bb or post it on the web and download it if necessary. But if you want the simplest way to have a solid-color background:
1) In Pictures, select the BlackBerry-logo background that has a block of color closest to the color you want.
2) View that image and zoom in as far as the zoom tool will take you.
3) Pan around (if you don't have a trackball, use clickwheel to go up & down or alt+clickwheel to go left & right) until you find the part that is the most solid color.
4) Choose "Set As Home Screen Image." It will use the zoomed/panned view you currently have on the screen. Done.
[Edit: also try the images that have large blocks of color -- for example, as you can guess, you can get a nice solid black from the lower left hand corner of the "Orbital" graphic.]
