I've used a pre-paid SIM in my BlackBerry 7230 and 7100X and they work fine but a BlackBerry data tariff is a subscription service and so is not supported on pre-paid tariff's. Your phone will be able to make and receive calls & text messages but no email functionality.
You could try O2; they are able to forward all emails sent to your O2 email account (you get one when you buy your pre-paid SIM and register it online) to your mobile as a text message. You are charged GPB £0.10-0.12 for each message sent or received by your mobile device.
O2 do offer pre-paid Bolt-On's where a said amount is deducted from your pre-paid credit each month (a subscription styled structure); perhaps they could offer a BlackBerry data tariff Bolt-On in the future?
