Long story short.

This blackberry was connected to a USB port. It was functioning fine with respect to synchronization and so on. All was well.

Short story longer.

Apparently, this end user had Palm Software installed as well.. hence, suddenly the Blackberry stopped working.

I removed the palm software, removed the blackberry software, re-installed and I'm still faced with the following error:

The blackberry get detected by Windows as a "USB Device" - some random generic device driver I guess. However, even after it's detected, there is the error code that states "This device not working." or something just as ambiguous.

In any case, I try to force it to use the RIM-Handheld device driver... by manually choosing that from the driver list, and I get a very weird error when I install the driver:

Could not install device driver because of function driver is missing (or something very similar to that).

What the heck? Help!

Conclusion:
The user's wireless email reconciliation is still functional, but the blackberry desktop software (and obviously.. windows with it's mighty drivers) Can no longer detect the blackberry.

Did you replace the sync cable? Maybe the cable is broken...

This is driving me insane.

I'm .. tentatively informed that it is possibly the fact that windows is looking at the wrong drivers, so I have to go deleting some .inf and .sys files.

What's killing me is that I've fixed this problem on another machine, years ago.. and now.. I've totally forgotten. My fault for not recording the method somehow.

I have done a complete remove, a re-install, totally wiped the machine and tried again... It seems to be triggered I would assume by some patches from the microsoft windowsupdate.com website.

Any help as to how to fix this annoying "function driver blah blah for the device instance blah not found" would be very very very very appreciated.

You try downloading and (re)installing BlackBerry Device Manager from here:
https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/browseSoftware.do

Perhaps reinstalling just the device manager (which is the driver and systray applet) would work? Other option would be to do a search'n'destroy on everything referenced in RimUsb.INF

Casual browsing indicates this is probably:

Files:

Registry Keys:
HKR, RimUsb\*

Had the same happen to me. Had to do a program uninstall and then had to clean the registry of some nasty thing left behind. Reinstalled the desktop software and it work perfectly. This happened years ago when I had Palm on the computer as well. I found the detailed instructions after a Google which gave me detailed steps to fix this. You might want to try!

Well.. fixed it and rebroke it.

The Blackberry 7750 no longer functions with fully-patched Win 2k.

I removed the 7750 physically and plugged in a 7250 (different connector - one is a USB-Cradle (7750) and the other is a USB-mini thingy (7250)) and the 7250 worked perfectly.

So remember.. don't use a 7750 with a win2k. After doing some more research, the 7750 apparently works fine with WinXP or Win2k Missing the critical patches from around.. 4-6 months ago.

You sure something isn't grabing the COM port?
