Default Email Or SMS?

I have a question I am not to sure about. Any clarification would be greatly appreciated. If I send a message to a phone number (ex. [email address]) is this considered email/Data or SMS?

another question on this. I made an IT policy preventing SMS messages and applied it to myself, however I was able to send it using the above method. Should that be possible?

If you're sending the message it is treated as data. Whoever receives it will receive a SMS. The reply to that the recipient will see will be whatever email address you sent it from.

Hope I made that clear enough!

Well that makes sense as to why the IT policy allowed me to send it.
