Using 7290 in South Africa
I have just acquired a BB7290 and am learning the ropes. I am taking it overseas for the first time - from Canada to South Africa. I understand it should work there because it is a quad band phone.
Here's my newbie question. My old phone, a Samsung, required a manual change to the settings to access bands in Europe. Does the BB7290 do this automatically?
Also, I use the BB to access my Gmail account. Can I do this in S Africa as well?
Your phone should indeed work in south africa,
normally most blackberries are set to choose a network automatically, however, sometimes you will be connected to a "wrong" network (network without a roaming contract with your provider). so if your blackberry doesn't pick up a signal you can switch to manual selection under: settings > mobile network > select "manual" for the "network selection mode" your system will scan for available networks > choose one which is recommanded by your provider, because it might be that they do work all, but costs may vary depending on the roaming contract
