Default BB8820 WiFi?

Please Login to Remove!

how can I tell if my WiFi on my 8820 is working?

I am a network guy and I do understand IP.

I can ping and resolve DNS, but I can't tell if any applications are actually using it.

To add to the confusion, I never get anything more than a greyed-out "WiFi" symbol and the icon in "Manage Connections" is nothing more that a yellow circle with a minus sign in it, never a green check mark.

Help!

If you've made a connection, the SSID should appear next to the carrier on the home screen. The more telling thing is you ar not seeing a WiFi Green indicator showing you have made a valid connection. What security are you using?

Are you in an area with WiFi service. Have you connected to that WiFi?

If you think you are connected to WiFi, open "Manage Connections" and select "Services Status". It will show you, by connection type, what the BB thinks is available (and being used).

If you only get a greyed-out "WiFi" symbol and the icon in "Manage Connections" is nothing more that a yellow circle with a minus sign in it, then your device sees the wi-fi network, but no data is going over it. What type of router are you using? I had an issue with my netgear rangemax -- set to "auto 108" I had the greyed out icon and the yellow circle. Iswitched it to "G only" and it works fine.

Once you get a green indicator, shut off your phone radio through manage connections, to see if data is going over the wifi connection.

Okay, here we go.

I am using a Fortinet Firewall with buit-in access point. I believe that I am connected tot he wirless network and passing, at least simple, data.

I am using WEP.

I can ping and do DNS resolves form the WiFi Diagnostic Tools built-in to my 8820.

But, I get nothing more they the greyed-out WiFi logo and the yellow ball with the minus sign in it.

This is perplexing.

I have, for fun, attached the Wi-Fi Diagnostics Report:

Default Associated, but...

It looks like your BB is indeed up on wifi, but look down at the BIS and Enterprise sections... it looks like this BB isn't able to get out to either A) the internet so it can connect to the BIS server or B) your BES server. If you're using this BB on BIS, make sure the AP your connected to can get out to the internet and can pass SSL (TCP 443) traffic. If you're using BES, make sure the AP your connected to can pass SSL (TCP 443) traffic to your BES server.

I just got my 8820 tonight and am having the exact same problem!

I bought an unlocked 8820 from the States and am using it on Rogers in Toronto.

The phone seems to work with my old Rogers SIM card as I've been able to dial out and use data services.

I don't have a BlackBerry data plan, BIS or BES.

I can connect to my TKIP network and ping hosts, resolve DNS entries etc., but the connection icon remains a yellow barred circle.

Any ideas folks?

You should be able to use the "wifi browser" and get some Internet access, but unless you have a BB data plan, most everything else will not work over wifi.

As sorry as I am to say this, this is NOT true. I spent almost an hour with AT&T customer service today. 20 minutes on hold with the rep waiting for a RIM rep. He got on the line and informed the AT&T rep that the wifi feature will NOT fully function unless you buy a Data Plan. It will identify your network and even connect to it. But without a plan it will not download information. The rep even laughed as he joked about how much money wireless carriers would lose if this did work. He even said, "Don't tell your customer that." (He didn't know I was there LOL)

This is sad as I will now be returning this phone.

Default Wifi works without SIM card, much less data plan

I have used the wifi browser on my 8820 with NO SIM CARD INSTALLED. Web pages loaded. I did this when I first got it out of the box, before I ever installed the card for the first time, so it is not possible I was just seeing cached versions.

I took the SIM out and tried it again just now. It works. There is no question that it is using the 802.11 network; I can see the traffic with tcpdump. The "WiFi" logo remains grey, and the connection icon remains yellow (not green), but the SSID shows on the main screen, and the browser works (as long as you put it in WiFi mode, of course). Opera Mini works if you check the "use wifi" option. Some other third party applications which know about the Wifi API probably also work. Of course blackberry email isn't going to work.

Maybe something different happens if you *have* a card in, and that card *doesn't* have a data plan, but I can't test that. Alternatively, maybe the AT&T OS version is crippled? I'm with T Mobile.

Default AT&T & Wifi

I wasn't able to get WiFi to work correctly until I enabled the BIS data plan. Then the icon lite up properly and I connected and transfered data via wifi. I did run up a $70 bill with AT&T Media net as pay per use charges. I contacted AT&T and they refunded the Media Net charges.
