The PIN messages use the same profile as the "Messages". This is also how it worked on the 7130 I had. If they were not level 1, they would ring using the same tone I had set when I received an Email. It's just another message. By making them level 1, it gives it the "special" ringer for those type messages.
I tested this with a Verizon user on our BES network and her 8830 (without level 1) gave her the "message" notification she had set (it didn't put the text in red or give the level 1 ringer). So I know it works with other 8830's, but I guess not with Sprint.
So my next step is go back to Sprint Tech Support and have them report it to RIM and maybe the next software upgrade will fix this...
