Question 8830 PIN notification - HELP!

Please Login to Remove!

HELP! I've called Sprint support and didn't get much help. Here's my problem. I can send/receive PIN messages fine. I just don't get the notification (ring, vibrate, etc) when I get one, unless PINs are set to Level 1 messages.

Here are my settings:
Profile on vibrate
Messages set to vibrate within vibrate profile
Make PIN messages Level 1 set to NO under message options
Results:
I get PIN message, but no vibration alerting me I have one.

Second settings:
Profile on vibrate
Messages set to vibrate within profile
Make PIN messages Level 1 set to YES under message options
Level 1 messages set to vibrate
Results:
I get PIN message and vibrate (along with red text indicating Level 1 message).

Does anyone with an 8830 get a PIN notification when they are not set to Level 1? It worked on my 7130, but this is my second 8830 and it still doesn't work. Sprint thinks it's not allowed on the new software, but doesn't make sense to me why they would work as just Level 1. All other notifications (text, phone, email, etc) work, just not the PIN.

Also, another employee on the BES server with a Verizon 8830 gets the notifications...

Anyone want to test with me, or can tell me if you are getting the notification when it's not set to Level 1?

Thanks.

Default Anyone?

Any Sprint 8830 owners who can tell me if they get PIN notifications? Is my phone (second one) also defective?

I've never had PIN messages NOT level 1. However, now that you mention it I don't see anywhere in the profiles where you would set PIN message separately. My guess would be that if you don't set them as level 1 you won't get a notification.

I get the notification (vibrate, tone, etc) if they are set to level one (also text in red). You can take them off level one by going to messages, then options. Under General options, change "make PIN messages level 1" to No.

If you can do that and tell me if you get the notifications, then that will tell me if my phone is defective or if RIM or Sprint has a software problem!

The only problem about setting them to level one is I have my "emergency work problem" mails set to level one. I don't want any friends who send me PIN messages setting off my "car alarm" ringer! It gets my heart beating and sometimes scares the heck out of me!!

Thanks again for the help. It's driving me crazy. It worked fine on the 7130.

Doesn't need to be a Sprint user. I just changed PIN messages to not be level 1 and I don't get a notification. PIN messages don't have their own setting in profiles. Unless they are level 1 you won't get a notification.

Edit: Changing them back to level 1 now.

Wirelessly posted (8700g: BlackBerry8700/4.2.1 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/100)

I see what JC is saying. There is no profile field for PIN messages. When you set 'no' on make pin messages level 1 in messages options, what are you in fact doing? That's a rhetorical question. I don't know, but from what you indicate, maybe it depends on OS, as others are getting some notification and you are not. Maybe I'm just restating the obvious. Sounds like you may be stuck with what you got unless you can upgrade, or you downgrade.

Can you get by with setting PIN back to level 1 and do a workaround for the other with filters or custom phone tune for particular contacts?

Default Guess I'm stuck

The PIN messages use the same profile as the "Messages". This is also how it worked on the 7130 I had. If they were not level 1, they would ring using the same tone I had set when I received an Email. It's just another message. By making them level 1, it gives it the "special" ringer for those type messages.

I tested this with a Verizon user on our BES network and her 8830 (without level 1) gave her the "message" notification she had set (it didn't put the text in red or give the level 1 ringer). So I know it works with other 8830's, but I guess not with Sprint.

So my next step is go back to Sprint Tech Support and have them report it to RIM and maybe the next software upgrade will fix this...

Sort of makes sense, except somewhere along the line with upgrades, we now have individual profiles for each email account. I don't have a messages profile; I have messages (user@tmo.blackberry.net), messages (user@yahoo.com) etc. And I have diferent profile settings for some of the accounts versus the others. Now I'm curious what happens for me if PIN is not level one. I've always had it level 1.
