Default BBMaps working on unlocked AT&T 8820

Please Login to Remove!

I installed the latest OS, which contains BBMaps, on my unlocked AT&T 8820 without a data plan following the instructions listed in this forum sticky: http://www.blackberryforums.com/gene...e-english.html

I then followed the instructions to get BBMaps to appear as described in this forum sticky: How to get BBMaps to show on my Blackberry

The BBMaps icon still wouldn't show up, and with the help of some forumers we identified a file listed in LBS.alx (which describes BBMaps parameters) that was not including in the Java files with the OS.

After fiddling with this problem on and off for a day and a half, my data plan was finally activated. At this point I took John Clark's advice and deleted BBMaps from the unit, then downloaded it from mobile.blackberry.com. Lo and behold it showed up immediately in the Applications folder, and works like a charm even over Wi-Fi with the cell radio turned off.

So to sum up, if you want to use BBMaps with your unlocked AT&T 8820:

1. Get a BIS plan at least.

2. Then just download it from mobile.blackberry.com.

Sorry I can't be of more assistance to the folks who are interested in running BBMaps without a data plan (like me), but if anyone can figure it out please PM me and I'll try it myself, editing this post afterwards so your solution is saved for posterity.

You NEED a data plan to run BBMaps, even over wifi.

The confusion was from following the instructions to make the BBMaps icon show up as described in this forum sticky: How to get BBMaps to show on my Blackberry

Even after following these steps with this particular OS, the BBMaps icon didn't show up. Note that other applications like Gmail won't work without a BB data plan either, but that doesn't prevent their icons from showing up or being able to launch. If I had followed the instructions listed in the sticky, then seen the BBMaps icon show up but give an error saying "you need a data plan to use this service", then it would have been much clearer.

Hopefully I can save someone else the pain of trying fruitlessly to get the icon to show up with this particular OS.

Yes, I know but you didn't have your .alx edited properly. I saw it in your other thread.

Not sure why we have 3 threads going on this.

John, I did have it edited correctly. I wrote in my other thread:

"After much investigation I think I've found a problem with this OS release. The unaltered LBS.alx file, which describes the BlackBerry Maps parameters, contains this fragment:

<!-- For non-8800 series, show the icon for all carriers except AT&T (102), Vodafone Germany (124), Vodafone Austria (137) and all Orange properties, including Amena (Orange Spain - 175). -->
<fileset SystemSize="normal" Colour="True" Java="1.0" series="8800">
<files>
net_rim_bb_lbs_internal_gps.cod
</files>
</fileset>"

Note I pasted the fragment from the unaltered LBS.alx, because I was trying to highlight a problem in a particular OS which contains that unaltered LBS.alx.

Well, the three different threads serve three different purposes.

1. My first thread reporting the problem of not being able to see the BBMaps icon even after upgrading to the latest OS and following the instructions on how to unhide the BBMaps icon.

2. A second thread reporting a possible problem with the latest 8820 OS as listed in the forum sticky, where a file described in the LBS.alx is not physically contained in the distribution, which according to senior member CBR990RR is a real problem.

3. My "success story" relating how I was ultimately able to get BBMaps working with an unlocked AT&T 8820, which will hopefully allow people to bypass the many other posts and get BBMaps up and running (even if I did cop out and use a data plan to get the icon to show).

I'm jazzed about this device and just want to help other people avoid the pitfalls I've discovered, as you can see from this thread I've already helped at least one other person get their Wi-Fi up and running.

I don't want to clutter the forum though, so I'd recommend deleting my original thread as I've summarized it in my success story, and the missing OS file is described in my OS issue thread.
