Default 8800 / Vista / and desktop software not playing nice

Please Login to Remove!

Ok, kind of like my kids at times, I have introduced something new into the mix and they are not wanting to play nice together. I have loaded DM 4.3, 4.2.2, and now have 4.2.1 loaded, and with all 3 I get the same issue. When I connect the to the Vista Laptop, I see the "connected to desktop" message on my phone screen, but I can not click on any of the DM icons. I simply want to be able to sync my contact list. Anyone who knows how long it takes to install and uninstall all 3 of th DM's I have listed above should see that I have given an honest effort to get this resolved before calling you guys.

I did select the USB connection, and it did recognize my PIN, so I do know that the device has been seen by the laptop.

I will say this. Some time after attempting to load this info on my laptop, and seeing that I could not make it work, I attempted to Sync with my XP desktop. I have used this desktop for several months to sync my . This time when I tried it, after having connected the to my laptop, I am getting the same "no responce" from my DM on my Desktop, as I was getting on the laptop. This did not happen prior to connecting the to the laptop. I am thinking there is a setting on the that needs to be looked at.

Can someone please direct me on this?

There are some reported issues with DM 4.3. You need to uninstall everything, reboot, and then install 4.2 SP2 from RIM's site. Do this with the BB not plugged into the USB on the laptop. Once 4.2 SP2 is loaded up, plug in USB and wait for it to load up all the drivers, you should be fine then. There are no issues with DM 4.2 SP2. I use it and I'm on Vista, works like a champ. 4.3, not so much.

After following your instructions exactly still I am having the same problems.

I unplugged USB from laptop.
I removed DM software from laptop.
I did a complete shutdown on laptop.
I waited for power to be completely off.
I turned system back on.
I installed 4.2.2.
I shut down the system.
I restarted.
I waited for hour glass to go away.
I plugged in USB
I opened DM because it did not auto run
I set up connectio to see my USB
I verified that the PIN number was seen by the laptop.
I attempted to click on Sync on DM but could not click on it.

What should I do next?

Thanks

Al

Are you sure you "shut down", because in Vista the default setting for the shutdown button is to go to sleep. BTW, I had said "Restart/Reboot", not shutdown. (That would have left out the possibility of you actually putting the thing in suspend rather then rebooting it.) Anyway, last thing to try would be to go and delete the sync profile. Go into your LoginName home directory (usually a folder on the desktop that is the same name as your login id). While in there go to Organize and choose Folder and Search Options. Go to the View tab and then set to Show Hidden Files and Folders. Then hit Apply and OK, now look in that location for a folder called AppData and then Roaming. Find the Research in Motion directory in the Roaming folder and delete it and everything that it holds. Do this with DM closed down, NOT with it running. Then start DM and plug your BB in. It should find the PIN again and allow you to go into Sync. If it doesn't, then you didn't follow my request above correctly. (i.e. you didn't uninstall something correctly) Good luck.

I have uninstalled at this point but not rebooted yet.

I am in the roaming folder under my account name. I do not see anything like what you are talking about. Hidden folders are visible.

Here is what I have in the folder "Roaming".

Adobe
Google
Identities
Installshield
Macromedia
Media Center Program
Microsoft
Sample View
Spare Backup
Comma Separated

I also checked under "USERS" and "DEFAULT" to see if it was in there. It did not show up in either area.

I am going to restart and reinstall now.

It's possible that the uninstall pulled out that info, but it's also possible that it didn't. If for some reason (directory security or something else) those directories cannot be created in the roaming profile store then that explains why you can't sync. Reinstall and try to sync. Then check the directories again. If Research In Motion is not created, then that's why you're having problems with Sync.

"research in motion" is not in there, but "blackberry Desktop" is in there. There are no sub folders that say "research in motion" below BB Desktop. Have we found the problem?

Thanks

Yes we have. That's why your sync function doesn't work. Check the permissions on the Roaming folder and make sure that SYSTEM, your login name, and Administrators have FULL access. Was Vista installed as an "upgrade" on your PC by any chance? Sometimes permissions get messed up on an upgrade, but it's very very rare and only with certain versions of Vista. (Ultimate doesn't have this issue btw.)

...and make sure that you install the BB desktop as the computer administrator, to be sure

I bought my laptop new from gateway about 3 weeks ago with Vista Home Premium OEM installed. The gateway version of MS Vista that is.

I have checked permission of all three of the above. I have "FULL CONTROL" on all three, but "SPECIAL" is not checked on any of them. I should not need "special" tho, since everything is covered in the other options, and "special" requires you identify what special options you want.

After installing again tonight, the desktop manager window pops open and then shuts in about half a second. I can not even get it to fully open now. My guess is that I should either "Z" out the phone, or reboot the OS. I am not sure which should go first though. I am also considering upgrading to "Vista Ultimate". Should I just go with the upgrade first and see what happens?

It could take a few weeks for me to be able to acquire the money needed for this.

The problem you're having is not with your phone. It's with your computer and an upgrade to VU is not going to change anything. What you need to do is call RIM support through AT&T and have them walk you through a thurough uninstall/cleanup of DM. Obviously it's botched your OS a little. I don't know how savvy you are with Windows, but an uninstall and manual cleanup of files/directories and the registry is in order here. I could do it in my sleep, but you may not be able to, so without going in to great detail I'd point you into phone support on the matter so that maybe someone there can help you along. Just make sure you ask for a RIM BB specialist and tell them the problems you are having and what you've already tried. Make sure they understand you want to do a cleanup of DM before they go any further. Tier 2 or 3 support may be in order.

With all of you guys helping out, I was able to figure it out without calling anyone. Here are some key words to remember next time you see this problem.....

Microsoft Office Groove
My Documents Sync's through groove
2 differnet OS's on desktop and laptop

When you are running Groove to sync My doc's between 2 different OS's the only way you can get rid of a file on "BOTH" systems is to physically remove it from one or the other. If you "UNINSTALL" from one system it is still "Sync'e" on the other system. Thus, the next time you reboot the uninstalled system, the groove auto refreshes the documents that you thought you had refreshed..... BUT...... since it is on 2 different OS's the file is saved in a different spot, so I was looking for the document in the wrong place....... i.e. I can not sync my entire "my documents" folder, but instead must just sync files and folders within the "my documents" to keepthis from happening in the future.

Now that i have that figured out, I am going to go back to the origional post and try to turn my BB into a modem.

Can the BB be set up as a FAX modem as well as an internet connection, once I follow the instructions on the walkthrough?

Thank you guys for all of your help. You helped me understand how the system worked which made it possible for me to understand the problem. Thanks for real.

^^^ Good info, but the problem you describe is because Vista's "My Documents" location is actually more like the old C:\Documents and Settings\Profile rather then C:\Documents and Settings\My Documents. Right now in Vista the profile path holds the Documents, Pictures, Music, etc. folders you're used to just seeing as subfolders in XP under My Documents. Bad part about that is that profile path also holds the AppData folder which was the old Local Settings folder. Anyway, it's good to know something like Groove was involved in this. It's always that little piece of info you leave out that you think is not pertinent that ends up being the key to the whole puzzle. Trust me, had you not been asked a specific question about this setup or thought to mention it to RIM support even they would not have guessed about your perticular setup/problem.

Congrats on solving it... feels good, doesn't it?
