Default Question about 8820 (ATT)

Please Login to Remove!

Hi there,

I am totally unfamiliar with any new blackberry devices. However, I went to BB website to do a comparison about 88xx and 83xx. I noticed 8820 has the GPS and wifi features. However, they are up to the carriers to enable / disable them or not.

I also checked up the ATT website regarding the 8820. It seems ATT 8820 only has WIFI.

My questions are

1) is it a software enable the GPS feature? or it is hardware related issue?
2) Can I get it unlocked, and un-att-branded (for example: to load with CSL HK OS with Chinese fonts?) the ATT 8820 and use it with T-Mobile?
3) If the GPS is software related issue, does this internal GPS work with the Google Maps?

Thanks for all helps in advance.

Thanks for replying. I assume when you said "ATT 8820 has both WIFI and GPS", it means it comes out the box and fully functional without doing any OS upgrade and etc. Correct?

Thanks again

I think I might get this 8820 as my xmas gift

Yes. However, there is no software on the 8820 to take advantage of the GPS as it comes out of the box UNLESS you purchase the TeleNav option from AT&T. Not, that doesn't mean you HAVE to pay for TeleNav to use the GPS. There are lots of programs available that will use the internal GPS of the 8820. On mine, I have Google Maps, Nav4all, Windows Live Search, InfoSearch FindIt and an older version of MapQuest Navigator. The only one of those that has a monthly charge is the Mapquest.

Take a look in the GPS forum here for more info.

I just moved to the 8820 and I can say having both WiFi and GPS is awesome and the device is exceeding my expectations where it needs to.
