Red face 4.2 re-install problems

Please Login to Remove!

Purchased 8703e used from a friend. 4.2 already installed on unit. Installed 4.2 Desktop manager from Verizon onto PC (had hicup suspecting this may be an area to explore). Unable to load BB messenger onto unit (see here:http://www.blackberryforums.com/gene...er-unable.html)
Downloaded 4.2 for unit again today to PC, but an unable to load onto handset. When I open up desktop manager with handheld plugged in and click on application loader, I get no prompts to begin download of 4.2. I do see the software in the list of stuff to download, but when I select 4.2 it asks me to seach on my PC to select the file where that application is stored. I need help moving on from here.

Side note: following instructions in FAQ, I did delete vendor.xml from the programs/commonfiles/RIM/apploader section of my PC. Do I need to get that back if I do not move forward with a re-install of 4.2?

Thanks

Mark

There are two pieces of software you need. One is the Desktop Manager. The other is the OS installtion package. Both must be installed to the PC. Once the OS is installed to the PC, delete the vendor.xml file again and you'll see all the software on the handheld.

I understand all that. However, you must have the matching handheld OS 4.2 installtion file loaded on the PC, as well, in order to see what's on the device and make changes.

Go here and download the proper OS and install it to your computer.

Ok, so you downloaded the 4.2.1.174/4.2.1.106 OS software AND installed it to the PC? AFTER installing BOTH files (Desktop Manager AND the OS package) you deleted the vendor.xml file and STILL nothing shows up when you run Application Loader?

I would update your Desktop Manager to 4.2 SP2 from here:

BlackBerry - BlackBerry - Sys Req V4-2 Pack 2

Then reinstall the 4.2.1.174 OS package again and delete vendor.xml again. Then try Desktop Manager/Application Loader again.

When I clck on application loader I see:

BB 4.2 system software
BB 4.2 core application
plus a whole bunch of language ones and so forth

If I select add and then ok, I get a PC dialoge box prompting me to go find and select where to get the application from on my PC. I thought the program would auto load?

BTW...why are some line grayed out in the application loader list?

Ok, that's what you should see. Don't worry about the "add" button. Scroll down the list and see if you see "Blackberry Messenger." Check the box for it. You can uncheck all languages except for English, uncheck MDS Runtime (if listed,) uncheck sample video (if listed) and you can uncheck DoD Certificates. Make sure everything else is checked that you want installed. Then hit finish at the bottom and go all the way through to the end.

It was the ADD button that was screwing me up. Rebooting now. Yes I wanted messenger. Gonna be around for a few more minutes?

All you did was load the BBMessenger app and then the device rebooted. You didn't wipe anything off the device.
