Default BB 8820 and 6mb media card

Please Login to Remove!

I have a BB 8820 with OS4.2.2.169. I've inserted correctly a 6MB Sancard. "The media card is not presently interested in the device".

Do I need to upgrade the OS? Will the 6MB card work even with the updated OS?

I don't believe 4GB cards and up work yet on BB. Last I remember, microSDHC will be supported in OS 4.3 for all devices.

Default 6mb

Is Micro SDHC mean SanDisk High Capacity?

Isn't OS4.3 available now? I could upgrade?

When upgrading OS - does the settings and address book, etc all remain saved or do they need to be reinstalled?

Yes, SDHC means High Capacity. Once 4.3 becomes available you will update your BB OS through Desktop Manager. During the upgrade you have the option to backup/restore all of your current settings, messages, etc. during the process or you can just upgrade the OS losing all data.

Here is some more information about upgrading:

OS update scheduled to be released first quarter 2008. My 8830 claims to support up to 8GB out of the box. Have not tried as of yet. Will let you know if it works.

Unless your 8830 is running 4.3 (unlikely) the 8GB microSD card won't work.

My 6GB card shows up on my 8820 running 4.2 OS, I thought it was limited to 4GB for now?

4GB microSDHC cards work very well with no issues.

It is the 6GB & 8GB that do not work without the OS4.3 (which is only available for the 8130 right now). I tried a 6gb myself in my 8830 and could NOT get it to work.

I actually had better luck putting the 6GB card into my LG Muziq (for now) where at least it can read all 1390 MP3s and play them. Even on the Muziq; though, its OS & media card utilities do not understand the format and think it has a 2gb card inserted. But the Media Player (Sprint Music Store) does successfully read and play all of the songs!

I'm using the Sandisk USB Micromate SDHC Card Reader & adaptor that came with the 6GB card to transfer music. Otherwise; my WinXP PC also had trouble reading/writing to the 6GB card.

I have a 2 gig card in my 8830. will wait until 4.3 and then get an 8 I think.

I can remember when a 5MB HD was as large as a TV set! (PDP drives!)

Warning do not format your card with the BB Format on your device if your capacity is larger greater than the acceptable level above. My 6GB card is toast reading at 1.6GB and SanDisk will NOT help, won't replace it and told me to call RIM to get it fixed.

Do a google search for SD Formatter. You want the one that is provided by panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/sd/download/sd_formatter.html

You will probably need the SanDisk MicroMate usb adapter in order for it to work. I know it won't work when the card is installed in the blackberry, i don't know if it will work with any other adapter other than the SanDisk one. This program will repartition your card to 6GB.

Next time search a little harder. This was covered already.

Thank you for the info. Until now I had never heard of the SD Formatter software and it did fix the problem. Its kind of funny, that (after nearly 3+ hours) that SanDisk support had no clue about this, BlackBerry support (with an assist from AT&T support) stated that using the BB Format on the device should not damaged the card and a simple reformat on your windows desktop would fix it. He was right and so were you dakatza but I just needed the special app. So now my 6GB Micro SD card is out of my 8820 and I will order a 4GB for now and wait for the 4.3 OS to come out sometime in the future.

Isn't this forum the best? I would never rely on a minimum wage call center operator to know anything technical about anything. As always, educating yourself is always better. Cheers

dakatza you are correct about that. The most amusing part was the amount of time I could have saved if I had spent time using the search (I admit my error there). But even more astounding is how I wound up with the exact same tech support agent for SanDisk who after an hour of strong discussion (civil but not happy) SanDisk said the card should never be formatted on a mobile device to only use Windows and that it was not a defective card.

Fortunately for me the SD Formatter app did fix the card and now I know much more than I did yesterday.

yeah, i foresee this being a HUGE problem with the bigger cards coming out and people buying them for not just their phones, but their cameras that they bought 2 years ago. I tried to explain the formatting issue to someone my parents age and they could not grasp how a card that fits inside their camera would not work to its full capacity. I think there are going to be a LOT of unhappy consumers. I don't know of any consumer cameras from a few years ago that release firmware upgrades.

I inserted a 4GB card in my 8820 right out of the box. Works perfect. I have four 8GB cards coming end of the month.
