Default Just bought a BlackBerry 7100i and have questions

Please Login to Remove!

Hello,
This is my first post here. I just got a BlackBerry 7100i. I actually haven't even received it yet.Nextel is my carrier. They'll activate it when it arrives. So far I have never used any internet applications on any cell phone ever. I am upgrading from a i670 phone that I just hate. I am hoping I can visit different websites on my new BlackBerry and check my gmail. I did read that Gmail doesn't support BlackBerry but I was told that it will have browsing capabilities so I should still be able to check it. Is this true? Can I go to Message Boards/Forums like this forum I am posting on?

To get the features I want can you tell me what would be the best plan to sign up for? I also want to be able to continue using my phone so I'll need to keep my minutes. I noticed on the Sprint/Nextel site that there are 3 plans. What one do you recommend?

Does anyone have any tips on setting up my new BlackBerry? It uses the same SIM card as my current phone so will it still have all of my contacts and ringtones saved?

Thanks!

You'll need to get a Blackberry Data Plan on your account. Once you do that GMail most certainly does support Blackberry. You'll find many blackberry users here use GMail because it integrates so well on the BB.

Yes, you'll be able to use forum boards like this one. We have one made just for BB. It's wap.blackberryforums.com

Thanks! That makes me feel pretty confident that I am gonna love it! I called Nextel and the recommend the unlimited plan at $49 per month!

I am glad my gmail will work!

I am a huge Nuno Bettencourt/Extreme fan and recently the band got back together and my fan forum was made official by the band so I like to check it frequently since I am the administrator. It's a Phpbb style forum EXTREME :: Index Will I be able to check my forum while I am away with my BlackBerry?

Are you on a company Blackberry server? If not, may I ask why you went with the Nextel device and not a Sprint device - coverage or price perhaps?

Reason I ask is that you can get an unlimited data plan with Sprint for $30/mo that includes unlmited data, unlimited text messaging, Sprint Navigation (GPS), and Sprint TV. MUCH better bundle for the personal Blackberry user.

However, if you have coverage issues with Sprint, I wouldn't recommend it. Or if your device will be connected to a BES server (company Blackberry server) then you do need the plan you have.

No company server at all. I am actually the first person I know to get a BlackBerry. I went with the Nextel because my husband and I are stuck in a Nextel plan until March 2009. I am not sure if I could switch to Sprint and leave him on Nextel and if I could if it would be worth it. Sprint and Nextel both have good coverage where I live. Nextel is better than Sprint where I work though.

Good reason to stay with it (coverage).

Although, when my hubby and son switched from Nextel to Sprint, there wasn't an early term fee (since it's the same company, just 2 different networks). BUT, he got that noted on his account before he switched.

you can't get the 30 dollar plan on nextel? I thought verizon, Nextel, sprint , and ATT dropped the plan to 30 as its a RIM decision?

I guess I'm getting screwed, Nextel phone service, Blackberry Internet and Email unlimited no TV, $39.99 per month on top of my phone plan.

Can I call and complain about this?

It came today and I got it set up. I checked a website fairly easy enough. I figured out how to transfer all of my addresses from my sim card to the Blackberry address book but I can't seem to get my ringtones that I had downloaded. It isn't the end of the world but I liked my ringtones. Typing is a little tricky too. This is definitely gonna take some getting used to.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry7100i/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/103)

That will be nice! I ended up with a $44 plan because my employer offers a discount. I'd love to pay less.

Default Just like to add

Your 7100i will send and receive your gmail flawlessly. In fact, google offers a little program to download to your BB that places your gmail on your main screen with a dedicated icon.

If I could get a better plan on the 7100 I would stay with nextel but sprint gives me 21 percent off there phones and only 10 % on nextel so getting a pearl is a better bet for me. I sure wish there was more choices on the nextel side of things.

Default Data Plan ?

Does anyone know if there is a discount for the data plan if you are a nextel employee ? My cousin works there and that is how i got my phone, but he is gone on vacation, and I am dying to know.

Thanks

P.S. I am new to this forum, but see that everyone seems to have good knowledge about the blackberry!!!

I haven't heard from anybody if the nextel discount has moved over to sprint. Hmmm... we will have to see anybody?
