I know the Sith Master will probably nail this one in a minute, but I have to exchanve my 8830 for a new one the "d" key only works about half the time, so I was looking at the desktop software and saw this option. My question is though do I need both phones available to me when I do the switch? I have to take the phone up to the store and get a new one, now unless I take my laptop with me, which I can do, and do it there on the desk at Verizon (man they would love that) or can I start the back up, and then take the phone up and bring it back and finish the process.

I have not clicked on the button for fear of starting the process and not being able to stop, kinda like a nuclear launch once its started it can't be stopped LOL..

Any help would be appreciated.

You would need both devices with you. In theory your idea will work. Essentially what the switch device wizard does is creates a backup from your old device and then restores it to your new device. You could manually create a backup and when you get the new device, restore it.

You could also run the wizard, connect the old device, let it complete, when it prompts for the new device, you could then leave it running, get the new device and connect it when you return. I dont really see any harm in doing it this way.

Do this masterdog:
With your old device in-hand, and no new device yet:

1. Do a complete backup of the old. If you sync to Outlook or whatever, do that also as a safety measure. The backup should be named with the data of the backup in the name. Not the name and location of the backup and after it is finished, do a search of your PC to confirm truly the *.ipd file is there.

2. A backup from Desktop Manager will not do a complete backup of your Third Party applications, so do this:

3. All confident you have everything, you can proceed to return and exchange devices.

4. Restore from Desktop Manager, Advanced restore, find your IPD file, and follow the instructions from JC's post about backing up third party apps.

HOLY COW THIS WORKED. I mean I am not surprised that you all had this written down, but it worked!! It was so easy. I mean I even taught the techs at Verizon how to do it, well this was after it took them an hour to get me my new phone and I stood there and almost did the switch myself, but THIS REALLY WORKED.
