Default 8700c voice hands-free usage to comply with CA law

Please Login to Remove!

By July 2008 all cell phone users in California will be prohibited by state law to hold their phone while driving. And, in order to use a headset, the phone must be equipped with voice dialing. (My car does not have Bluetooth.)

I can't find any voice dialing info in the BB manual or in the BB Forum on this topic pertaining to the 8700c.

Is software available that will allow the 8700c to voice dial? Or is there a "work-around" (like a Bluetooth solution) to permit voice dialing?

Thank you, Thor

Here is what the law says:

New Cellular Phone Laws that Go Into Effect July 1, 2008

Maybe I misinterpreted the law, but I didn't think it meant the phone had to be equipped with voice dialing to use a headset.

As a lawyer (outside of CA) that is how I would interperate the law, as well.

To answer the question, though, the 8700 doesn't have voice dialing, nor will it ever.

Thank you for the replies. John answered my question.

I may have been unclear in my question. I was trying to find out if there was a way I could overcome the 8700c lack of voice capability by hooking it up to another device (like a headset) so I could dial/talk hands-free. But it looks like I'll have to upgrade to a new(er) Blackberry - assuming that a later model does support voice.

Yes, newer devices all have voice dialing.

So... I bought a Jawbone bluetooth 2 days ago. If I'm driving with the Jawbone on and get a call, I answer the call by pressing the talk button, I'm not breaking the law right? Or If I want to make a call with bluetooth on and hit a speed dial on the phone, that's not illegal?

I sure hope so because I can't afford to buy a new Blackberry before July 1! I'm not clear why the OP thinks he/she needs a new one.

A sales guy in the Verizon store told me there is an app that gives voice dialing capability with bluetooth to an 870(x) -- that you download and pay for once instead of having a monthly charge, but I haven't seen such an app anywhere.
