Default Data in China?

Please Login to Remove!

I just got an Alltel 8830 World Edition as I will be travelling to Beijing this weekend, and I read that when in global mode only phone and SMS abilities are available. Can anyone verify this, or hopefully tell me that I will still be able to get email?

Also, I just traded in my 8703e, which had no problems viewing Yahoo as a non-mobile site. My 8830 only gives me the mobile version, and I can't access my fantasy basketball page! Yes, I know it sounds silly.....but unfortunately, it is important to me. Any tips?

Thanks in advance!

Yes your 8830 will work fine in China. You may have to play with network settings a little. I have the best luck changing the network mode from "Global" to "GSM". It will find a signal , then ramp up GSM==>gprs==>GPRS. once you get to GPRS you will have full email synch. Also there are two carriers, China Mobile and China Unicom, you may have to manually switch back and forth occasionally to get data.

In Beijing, Shanghai and other major cities you should have 100% no problem. Last week I was in Nanjing and Chengdu and my data availability was spotty, but most places it works fine.

Good luck with the trip, it's been snowing terribly for days. . . .

Thanks for the help.

I've been watching the weather too, pretty spotty there. Our guide is coming from Gaungzhou, IF he can get up to Beijing. Airports are closing right and left, and long distance train service is all but cancelled. Shaping up for a great first trip!
