i have verizon for cell phone service. recently i had the chance to upgrade to a new phone, so i got an lg chocolate. here is my question: since im not eligible to upgrade at a discounted price for a new phone until 8/2009, is it possible that i buy a blackberry 8830 from ebay (thats obviously not the full retail $500) and get verizon to activate the blackberry with my existing family share plan that my chocolate is on and then of course add the $30 email/web plan? can i just be like, hey switch my chocolate off this plan and put it on this blakcberry i got instead?

thats the only way i can think of getting around that waiting 2 years for a new phone. i want a blackberry!!!

thanks in advance for any help you guys can offer

First, check the FAQ for buying a BB on eBay. Will save you a lot of grief, Buying a BlackBerry off eBay - BlackBerryFAQ.com

Second, if you do buy a used one, make sure it is a Verizon branded model. Get the ESN from the seller and call Verizon to make sure it can be activated.

The basics of your plan are sound. Do heed Dubdub's words of caution as far as eBay, however.

Mark, ditto ^^ the others, and you might also get a great deal on a slightly used BB here, in our Buy Sell Section.

I did exactly what you said. I had a razr that wasn't working. My contract isn't going to be ending until June 08. The warranty was over on my phone and it couldn't be fixed. They said I could buy another one just like it for $50. How generous of them.

So I bought an 8830 on ebay - a specific verizon unused bb. Not just an "unlocked" model. Then I called verizon and told them to cancel my service on the razr and switch it to the bb and I added the 29.99 data plan. I am on a family plan with my husband and kids, and that didn't change at all. It was easy and worked out well.

Glad to hear of an eBay success story! They're becoming harder and harder to come by.
