Hey just wondering if you found a resolution to your sms problem as I am having the same issue with my 8700c. I've updated the device software without any changes. I am using Rogers in Canada with my device so i dont know if that has anything to do with it as they only offer the 8700r.

Assuming your account is provisioned for SMS and it just isn't showing up in the message menu, try a hard reset (pull battery for 30 seconds).

it is possible it is a software issue or your account isnt provisioned properly by Rogers. (you may also have to send SMS via Email like Nextel used to). Try to upgrade your software on the 8700 (check the top of the 8700 forums)

Multiple hard resets, software loads, handheld wipes and nothing. software version is v4.2.1.101. everything on the phone is fully functional except sms. Backing up, do you guys have a blackberry data plan? As I recall with our daughter's pearl on TMO, without a blackberry data plan, we had to add 'blackberry enabler' to her account so that she could send/receive text. This feature is free of charge, but is needed on the blackberry to enable text. At least that's the way I remember it. Could be wrong. Is there perhaps something similar with your carrier? (I don't know if it is a carrier thing or blackberry thing.)

I don't believe so. That would only be if you didn't have the blackberry data plan. But regardless, sounds like you need to call carrier and find out why it doesn't work for you and get it fixed.

There are many who know more about this than me. It sounded to me that your blackberry is ship shape, so I'm guessing the fault is with your account. I'd call the carrier again and make sure your account is properly set up. I'll be curious to see what others say.

Default Update on this ongoing SMS issue

Hello: After one 85 minute conversation with T-Mobile and the actual manufacturer, here are my findings. RIM has nothing to do with SMS. All the steps we have taken have been correct. SIM was updated,OS reinstalled, hard resets, blablabla. The RIM rep said I needed to speak with my network and that he had heard about this issue the night I called. I was not the only one who had the problem. He suggested that I call T-mobile back and tell them it is most likely a network issue. After speaking to T-mobile again, they suggested I try another sim card. Hmmmm. I do not have an extra one, but as soon as I go to a T-mobile store, I will let you know. If anyone tries this before me, let us know your findings.

After trying different sims and software reloads, hard resets, and just about everything, i came to no solution. i know sms works on my sim because i can text from my sony erricson. I took the phone back to the store and exchanged it. My new one works perfectly. Good luck in trying to get yours to work. Please post your findings as i would still like to know what the problem was.

I'm wondering the same thing, why is there no SMS icon anymore?!

I did notice that the latest OS 4.2.1.107 merged all my messages together (SMS, Yahoo, G-mail) - I have it hotkeyed so when I press "m" all my messages are in one place ( feels like a step backward from the previous OS)

However, have you tried pressing "c" (compose) and then scroll to "[Use Once]"- click it with the track wheel and it should give some options, SMS being one of them.

Update: The new sim card did not work and T-Mobile has no idea why this is happening. Sorry, there is no good news.

I am experiencing the same problem! I purchased my phone off ebay. I have seen many discussions about this and only one discussion that had a resolution. Could it possibly be that the SMS was removed due to a coporate phone, as mine is? Can it be restored? I saw on a post to go to IT SMS but i am a new blackberry owner and i am not sure what all that means. Any advise from anyone would help??

Hi everyone. The latest OS for the 8700 is 4.2.1.114.

Please try loading the latest software again (as pointed out by Sith). It may just be able to show the SMS menu. Good luck.
