Default Access other functions while phone is off - during flight

I have tried several ways and have searched the 8830 docs, but don't find a way to access memos and other functions while the phone is off. I would like to be able to read PDF files, listen to MP3's and other things while on a commercial airliner.

be careful because many of flight attendents will not believe your device is off. i posted on here before that i had a nice friendly chat with an air marshal who instructed me to remove the battery from my device.
