Question Can you disable the "data always on" feature for 7280?

Please Login to Remove!

Greetings from a newbie in Oklahoma. I just bought a 7280 on Ebay (haven't got it yet)because I need a cellphone with a thumb QWERTY keyboard (stiffness in fingers really hamper my sending SMS messages, the curse of the grandparents!!). I am on Cingular Blue (former ATT) and have 3 active SIMs in my household.

I don't want you to think I'm a Cretan but .. here's the question: how does one disable all that fancy wireless email and web browsing and all that stuff and just use the device for a phone and SMS device? My data needs are small and I will have a USB sync/charging cable so I can use the BB Desktop app to sync my Outlook stuff in the morning before I leave for work. I have no need to be connected 24/7 (and ATT will charge me a bunch for all the data transfers) so I really would like to just turn off all wireless functions except for GSM phone and SMS.

Thanks for your assistance.

Just don't activate the BlackBerry Data Plan.

Pop in your SIM (and hope that the BB you bought on eBay is either unlocked or will work with your particular SIM). With no data plan, it will start up and say "data connection refused", and you will have voice (GSM) and SMS ONLY. Just like you want. No web browsing or other fancy wireless stuff.

Well, if BB Desktop won't allow offline email sync, is there another software out there that WILL allow it? By sync, I mean transferring the new email from Outlook onto the 7280 for later reading.

Thanks much, Alan

Not that I know of. Have you tried (auto-)forwarding your Outlook messages to your SMS acct?

Hey WNO, That was an excellent idea!! Thanks. I set up the rule to forward only emails addressed (in the TO) to me, it eliminated most of the junk mail. Out of 29 emails I rec'd today, it forwarded only 8 to my BB. I also set up a rule to forward my Gmail from Ebay, but not forward anything else. What a powerful tool email fording is.

Incidently, I got this somewhere on BBForums (can't remember where right now), but I am using teleflip for the forwarding add (ie: [email address]) instead of all that mmode stuff. It also works great!

See ya, Alan
