I bought the phone from a 3rd party. In options it gives me "new user" and enter old user info. I don't have the old info and apparently I am not a new user either. How am I supposed to get this thing going??

Call the carrier and have them remove the pin from the old user...

Wirelessly posted (Verizon 8830)

Also, please let us know if the carrier is cooperative.

You should check out this link from the FAQ Buying a BlackBerry off eBay - BlackBerryFAQ

Typically, if the original owner's BIS account is till active, you will need to have that person call his/her carrier and delete their BIS account, which will also release the PIN so you can set up your email and activate the device.
