So I've had multiple probs with my VZW 8830's from broken usb ports to fineky keybaords to now like extreme memory leaks and unable to use a mem card. So instead of getting an FRU (refurb) they shipped me a new 8830 to try and solve the issue, "free of charge". O no! The lady "forgot" to mention that even though I'm not buying the phone, VZW has to charge me the CA sales tax of $40 sumthin and its the law. Spoke with a supervisor and same story? Am I really stuck with that charge when they honestly did not tell me beforehand that that charge would occur? Thanks!

Phew am I glad I left California. I think you are probably stuck with it, however you could still complain and maybe they will give you a $40 credit towards your bill.

The sup said that becasue they have to charge me the tax by law that they cannot credit me. She said she had the name of the rep that issued the new BB (red :D) and that she would coach her in the issue (poor chick)....but like dam thats such a bad business practice to charge someone for something without telling them, and I told her that...o well, unless anyone has any ideas?

When I got Verizon to exchange my XV6800 for the 8830 they made a credit to my bill for $40 and some change. Then once I activated the phone I was charged the $40. It's all about who you talk to and how you approach the situation. I would call back and explain the history of problems and how you have been a valuable customer, how you tell all your friends what a great cellular provider they are, (blah blah blah) and get them to credit your account. I have had no issue getting what I want, and with little hassle.

I would agree with this. Squeaky wheel gets the lube, you know! The line about they could not credit you due to the law is a load of crap. They can do whatever they want with your bill. As stated above, it all depends on who you talk to. If push comes to shove, tell them that you are going to jump ship to ATT for the iPhone, they hate this... #1 competitor and a device they can not provide. Good luck!

This is so true. How you approach it definitely does make a difference. I've been a customer of Verizon for years and most of the time they'll give you a little leeway over certain charges and whatnot by mentioning this. With all that I've paid to Verizon over the years, they could stand to eat a few bucks here and there for my loyalty. They always get you in the end, anyway!

I don't know CA sales tax law, but occasionally stores will have "NO sales tax days when THEY pay the sales tax" but I don't know how that scheme works. A friend mentioned Ikea just had this the other day in Seattle!!!
