My desktop still delivers emails to the handheld when they are connected. In the redirector settings, I have check the option "disable message redirection while you device is connected", but it still is delivering all messages to the handheld.

You are probably getting your email via BIS not through the redirector. If you login to your BIS site and uncheck forward to the handheld for the account they messages will stop arriving.
