Question Getting Started---Help Req'd, please!

Please Login to Remove!

Hey all, new here...

My cousin gives and gets his cell phones on a hand-me-down basis---in other words, he often gets them from his father and gives outdated ones to me. Today, I inherited his 8700c. I would like to start using it productively; however, finding the right software to download and install seems very daunting. Could I get some pointers as to what kind of things I should download and install? That would help a lot.

It is the GSM version, v4.10.377 (Platform 2.0.0.152)...whatever that means.

Also, I noticed that under the battery, to the right of the SIM card input, is a small slot with a picture of a sort of card and an arrow. What is this?

Thanks for all the help I get,
Chiro

That picture is just a picture for how to insert the sim card.

Do you have a Blackberry Data plan on your account? If not, that's the first thing you need.

I have the same simple phonecall-only bread 'n' butter AT&T plan as I had had beforehand---all I did was move my SIM card. Though the 8700c wasn't exactly my first choice of phone, it's certainly an improvement over my old one---though it lacks a camera, it has BlueTooth support, a calendar, a better address book, a free headset, BrickBreaker, etc.

I'm only a highschooler. I wouldn't be able to afford a data plan, nor would I be able to get my parents to pay for one (of course).

Hmm. Does this mean I can't even download productivity software to hook the BB up to my computer? This seems kind of essential.

Productivity....Like what? Most apps require internet access, which you don't have. What, exactly, do you want to do?

Install Desktop Manager 4.5 English with Media Manager (if you want it--Media Manager will allow you to move pics/ringtones to the device, just don't load to many or you will fill up the device memory.) If you don't want Media Manager you can install the DM version without it.

Then you can update your OS to 4.2.1 in the second thread.

Thank you for your help! :-D

By the way, two questions...
---Are there any applications that allow you to listen to music on the Blackberry?
---Is the any expandability at all? Perhaps a Mini-USB flash storage device? Anything?

Sounds like you installed "Device Manager" not "Desktop Manager." There's a difference. You don't need "Device Manager" as it's included in "Desktop Manager."

Ah, you are right; thank you. This download is going to take a while---I may as well go to bed. Good night!

Question

Alright---I installed the Desktop Manager and ran the executable for updating the BB OS. After running that, it prompted me to open the BB Desktop Manager. Now, how do I restore the new OS to my BB?

All the instructions you need are in the thread for the latest OS that I linked you to. Did you delete the vendor.xml file as instructed? it's located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader. Delete it. Then run Desktop manager again with your BB plugged in and it should prompt you to upgrade.

Choose 8700c, download and install the software, and then run DM and have it do an update check. It should update from there with a little user input. This will give you the most updated stable version. of the 8700, 4.2

jlink, that wasn't a very stable version of 4.2.1, IMO. The version I linked him to above will do him better.
