Do I have to notify Verizon that I will be in London? I read somewhere that they have to throw a switch(turn on) the overseas capabilities.

Call your support number and explain your circumstances. They should provide you with an unlock code.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry 9000 4.6.0.67)

The unlock code is necessary to use a SIM other than the Verizon/Vodafone one. They need to provision the device (enable on the account) for you to roam using your number in London. Usually calling 1 week ahead of time is long enough, it does have to be more than 1 day or two.

You should get the international plan to save a few bucks on calls and data charges.
