I tried updating the OS on one of the devices to whatever the latest version was posted somewhere here in the forums. Still no luck with the mtg. requests.
I also looked on their laptops to check weather wireless sync is enabled in the BB Desktop Manager.

Any ideas, suggestions etc. help would be appreciated.

You can unlock by selecting: * and Send/Call key

Happily using BES with The Message Center Exchange Hosting

In case you didn't know, all the unlock will do is allow you to use another GSM SIM when you are outside North America. The 8830 is locked to CDMA in the US and can't be changed. Plus they are also locked to the network the device is branded with, i.e. Verizon on Verizon, Sprint on Sprint.
