My Blackberry Device Manager has always been very ropey and now it has failed completely.

Always, both with my old 7290 and my current 8800, it used to take 6-8 attempts before DM would open properly and allow me to back up or download new software. But it worked in the end and as I didn't use it that much, I tolerated it. But now either it simply won't let me in at all, and gives me an error message saying it needs to close down, or lets me in, but then says I have no device connected, when I have.

The version of DM I am using is 4.2.1, that came on a disk with my BB 8800, so it should work. I have uninstalled and re-installed it, that makes no difference. I have tried a different USB cable and USB port, that makes no difference.

I have seen some troubleshooting advice on the FAQs for this error message, but I don't seem to have the file it suggests deleting or renaming, so cannot act on it.

Any advice please?

What OS are you using on your Computer?

I have Windows XP Home.

What's the error you're getting? You can try to download and install CCleaner (it'll remove ALL unused Registry entries and completely removes all instances of software not being used or no longer installed on the machine).

Then reinstall the DM and it should work. I've had issues with the DM before and using that program fixed it since it removed the registry entries. That's what I believe is hanging you up. You uninstall the DM software but re-installation still sees those old registry keys that are causing the issue so it won't change anything.

Well, since I'm still a newbie here, it won't let me post direct links. Just google "ccleaner'.

I have downloaded, installed and run CCleaner. It certainly looks like a useful piece of software.

However, it has not solved my DM problem and I still get an error message and "No device Connected" when I go into Media Manager.

Any other ideas?

You may have a bad USB port. Are you connecting the device DIRECTLY to the PC? DO NOT use a USB Hub, they ALWAYS cause issues.

No, I have never used a USB hub. The port, indeed all 3 ports, work fine with other devices. And I have tried using my old USB cable and that gave the same problem, so I don't think it can be my current cable.

Today I don't get an error message straight away, but when I go into media manager, it says "no device connected" when it is connected. Then when I come out to try again, it freezes and the error message comes up.

This is maddening. There must be some reason why this is happening.

Oh dear, is there really no one who can suggest any other possible causes for and solutions to this problem? Am I doomed never to be able to back up my BB data again or download new software or music? I would also never be able to change my BB model as I would not be able to save and transfer the data to a new model.

Failing any solutions from anyone here, can anyone suggest any other source of advice I could go to please?

Everyone should be VERY careful with CCleaner. I recently had to help someone here on the forum who used it as suggested by a user, and it deleted the NTLDR files which are necessary to boot the PC. They were using XP Professional, but luckily they were able to restore the PC to a previous state. There are plenty of reviews online about this happening to people. I'm not saying it doesn't work, there are also great reviews of it, but be careful.

Have you tried installing DM 4.2 Sp2, and not installing the media manager. That might help; I know some folks have had issues with that.
