I don't know. I can't check right now (obviously).

An older version I am sure.

She has not upgraded the OS ever since she bought it (at least 2 years)

Let me guess...she had OS 4.1 on the 8700 and the pacman app was written for 4.2 and higher. This causes the device to reboot, spin the hourglass for about 5 seconds and repeat.

I have good news and bad news.

The good news is the device can be revived by following the procedure here: (in this particular case, JL_Cmder won't connect to the device because it's not up for long enough to connect)

What to do next if Jl Cmder will not connect and wipe - BlackBerryFAQ

The bad news is that, unless she has a backup, all the data on the device is gone.

Argh no!!

Yes that is exactly what it is doing.

There must be another solution.

She has never ever backed up anything.

I'm sorry. There is no other solution. I did this to someone's 8700 myself. Fortunatly, they were on a BES so all their data came back from their corporate server.

I wish there was another solution, but there's not. The data is gone.

Don't feel too bad, it's happened to me too.

Use jl commander wipe phone and then plug in the phone w/o batt to usb and reload os w desktop mgr. Hopefully you backed up apps before hand. This will atleast this will make phone stable again.

B
If this is 4.5 os , they say ithat it could be the media card, so take that out and do a batt pull.

Praise8320:
In this case JL_Cmder will NOT connect to the device. The method I posted is the ONLY way to connect to the device again.

They already posted that the OS has not been upgraded and that there was no backup. I know you want to help but you are only confusing the OP.

FWIW, I've done this twice to friends. I tried loading the Web Shortcut applications on an 8700 with OS 4.1. Unknown to the developer and myself they weren't compatible with OS 4.1. It sent the 8700 into the reboot loop just like yours. The method above was all that would work.

Before that, when the 8800 and 8100 had first come out I sent the colorpearl app to one of the other moderators here to load on their 8800. I had loaded it on my 8100 and it was working great. He went to load it on his 8800 and he ended up having to wipe the device and reload the OS. We learned later that only the 8100 had the colored LED's under the trackball and other devices weren't compatible with the program. Ask Stinsonddog about that!! He'll remember!

Fortunatly for me, in both cases, the friends were on BES and their data wasn't lost.

Tell your friend you're very sorry and you feel terrible but don't beat yourself up over it. It's how we learn

Note to self: Don't install software from links John provides.

Chillin, It is unfortunate but Johns solution is the only one.

To this day, Stins still plays 20 questions before loading anything I send to him. I've learned a few things since then, too, though.

The friend with the 8700 didn't know any better. I did it at the airport and had it fixed withing 40 minutes while we were waiting for our flight. I upgraded him to 4.2 and he was all happy!

Yet another reason to BACK UP routinely. Sucks that your friend is losing the data but had they backed up you would be in the clear. As stated, don't beat yourself up. I'm sure the friend will do that when they are done re entering all that data.

Your friend will have to install Desktop Manager and the OS for the 8700. Might as well upgrade her to OS 4.5

http://www.blackberryforums.com/gene...sian-lang.html

When they're done make sure they learn how to make backups!
