Default 8830 Help.

Please Login to Remove!

Hi, I am thinking about buying an 8830 and I have a very important question. Can anyone tell me if the 8830 is able to actually edit and save changes to word, excel, and powerpoint documents? Or is it simply able to view them? I was unable to find this information online or in the manual.

Thanks for the help!

If you load OS 4.5 on it, you can with Docs To Go, part of the OS 4.5 installation package. While there has not been an official release of this yet, it can't be long now as the other 8x30 devices have a release of 4.5, but there are beta's floating around out there.

With the upgrade to OS 4.5, yes. You will have DocumentsToGo from DataViz which will allow that.
You can view doc and xls files as it is.

Ok, so out of the box you can't. But you can update it and it will let you? That's great. Do you know if that update is free? Sorry for the silly questions, but I am a bit new to the Smart Phone scene as you can tell.

Yes, all OS upgrades are free.

Questions are fine, that why we are here. Welcome to BBF.

Wirelessly posted

You would still have to buy the full version of Docs to Go.

No, the free version will view, edit and save documents.

Sprint hasn't made any formal announcements, as far as I know. However, the word (including some info I got when I asked someone at Sprint) seems to be that Sprint will offer the upgrade (presumably for free) in September or October.

The built-in DocumentsToGo will allow viewing of Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. It will allow saving of existing documents. To create a brand-new document, you'll need to buy the full version.... or simply use a "trick" that's been floating around.

Personally, I've found the free 4.5 version of D2G to be mediocre. It's better than nothing, but don't expect this to be a mobile version of any of these apps. I used D2G on Palm devices and somehow it seemed better...
