Default GPS on 8830 (Sprint) outside the US

Please Login to Remove!

Hi once again =)

It seems that gps on my Sprint 8830 is malfunctional outside the US, am I right? In Advanced Options, GPS Tab I see Gps Data Source "None". I don't see any other options there. I'm using my 8830 with other service provider (GSM in fact) and I don't have any "service books". Tried to use gmaps - no results as with BB Maps.

oops, sorry, missed a sticky tread. %) but it's about Verizon 8830, but my BB is Sprint so, in theory, it should work properly.

No, GPS doesn't work outside the US. I'm not sure why -- have heard that it might be where the GPS chip is located in the construction, but it could also simply be the data requirements -- but it will not work in the UK or EU, at leat.

ok. At least I'll try to download the latest beta for it, may be it'll help. In fact I don't really need GPS but...

I'll tell about the result =)

Interesting Fact:
When I took my SIM off the phone and switched it on GPS became enabled! =) So it works without SIM card, but doesn't want with it. Starting flashing process. =)

In the end, it's working only without sim-card. I tried the original one from Sprint - no effect too.

Obviously, there is something ODD design-wise about the gps in the 8830's (if not the other phones) certainly in the Verizon (locked) or even the Sprint.

GPS satellites are always up there and their signals should be available. So it is the phone and how it uses those signals. If the phone relies on supplementary cell info, then they might be useless without those signals. The sim must turn some circuitry on/off that kills the gps in your sprint phone.

But now that you know that - can you use the gps with any software since you probably do NOT have data overseas?

Seems the World Edition might be a phone overseas and it might do data with the right sim but it is NOT a World Edition when it comes to the gps being useful outside the US?????

Wirelessly posted

As long as the maps were already downloaded Google Mpas works perfectly. I was camping for a few days without a power source to carge my phone so I turned the data off to save battery. You could only stay on one zoom level, it downloads a different map for each zoom.

Sprint and VZ BB's have Qualcomm chipsets with combined chipsets with GPS. The GSM chipset is different and does not provide GPS outside the US. You can always use an external Bluetooth GPS receiver outside the US.

Correct...I bought a Holus240 off eBay for $30 and will be using that with my 8830 next month when I'm in Europe.
