OK, From within Blackberry messenger, i click Add Contact, the address book comes up, I scroll to the top, click use once, and it just goes to a screen with "email" on it wanting me to type in an email address. At no time do i get the option to add someone using their PIN number. Any suggestions?

fixed it...needed to pull up the menu instead of just click it. duh.

Yes the best way to accomplish this is to have them saved in the address book. Go to add contact in BBM highlight the name then push the menu key and click add by pin.

You must have a PIN number in the address book for a contact to getit added to BB Messenger.

If your Blackberry is on an Enterprise Server you can also send an invite via email.
