Default Verizon 8830 as bluetooth modem?

Please Login to Remove!

Hello all -

Working at a company and an employee received a new laptop without a PCMCIA port, so now his old card won't work in the laptop. He has a Blackberry 8830 thru Verizon with some data plan (not sure which yet). I'd like to know how I can pair the phone to the laptop and make them work together as a modem for the laptop. Is anyone able to point me to a guide or explain what is necessary?

Welcome to the forums

He will need to have the tethering option added onto his plan as well. This is an additional charge.

This link should have all the info that you need. [User] HOWTO: Use BlackBerry As Modem For Laptop!

I absolutely love that FAQ. However, it says that Bluetooth tethering, which the original poster mentioned, is not available with OS 4.1 and 4.2. Any idea if that will be an option with 4.5 and up?

I have an 8830 with verizon using os 4.2 and I am able to tether my Mac to my bb with bluetooth. Now, I don't know if a PC might be different.

I am on 4.5 now, but before I upgraded was on 4.2 with an 8830 and BT tethering was no problem on a PC.

So aside from this extra cost option, there's no way to use the BB as a dial up modem on a laptop to send a fax while I'm the road?

Thx.

There are a few fax programs on Handango you could try out. I have not used any personally so I don't know much about them.

Are there any step by step instructions on how to setup Verizon 8830 in tether mode for dial-up networking? I understand this capability also needs to be part of service plan, but wanted to confirm. Any help or links to set this up would be appreciated.

I set mine up today and it works. I thought I was going to avoid the tehter fee but it just links you to the Verizon site.

In the alternative you can just download the Verizon software,VZ Access, and go that route.

That blows.
Even the humblest of dumbphones like my old StarTac & RAZR could initiate a dial up connection & send a fax using airtime & nothing else.
