Hey everyone, I actually don't have a BB, but I'm supposed to be getting one in a couple of days. The phone I chose a while back was the 8820 because of the Wi-Fi and GPS features. I will be using it more for e-mails but without a data plan, I was thinking of using it with the Wi-Fi, I'm already paying 75$ for an all unlimited calls plan and to add a 6gig 30$ plan on top of that is out of the question. Anyways, I have a close relative who got an Iphone and the Wi-Fi on that is great.

My question to you BB users out there especially the 8820, would you recommend the BB or the Iphone? I'm with Fido and they do not support BBconnect unfortunetly. And I do not want to get a data plan, not right now. With those circumstances, is it worth getting the 8820?

If you want to base your decision on browser experience, iphone is way better .

well thats a hard question to answer, in your case both would be useless because you dont want the data plan... i mean yes you can use the wifi, but you need to be in a hotspot or at home to use that, one the road you can only use them for making calls and text messages... even GPS will not work without a data place on either device

I have a BB 8820 on Rogers. I do not think it makes a lot of sense to have a BB without a data plan. I believe (not 100% sure - some of the experts may want to chime in) that you need a data plan to set up BIS BB e-mail. Without even the cheapest data plan, I am not sure the WiFi will allow you to do anything other than to go in to the internet and check webmail.

The whole iPhone thing is based aroundf internet access etc = data plan. having an iPhone without a data plan is like having a partially utilized device - i.e. why bother.

If you only check e-mail and do not open attachments etc. - you can get away with a lot less than 300MB for $30. There is the unlimited personal e-mail option for $15 (no browsing though). There are data plans for less than $30. Rogers is supposedly changing data plans in October, if you believe what is being circulated.

Blackberry/Iphone with no data is just a regular but expensive phone...

was reading your post,

if you have a personal email address, then definitely the BB is not right for you, you simply cannot connect to the internet through standard gprs, same is the case for the iphone.

you will therefore not be able to log on to the net without having a data plan only through a wifi hotspot. Even with a wifi hot spot or data plan, the BB standard browser on OS 4.2 is not a very savoury experience, i imagine you will need to log onto your personal email account through the web portal, as you may receive email via wifi, but how will you reply to it. THERE IS NO PROVISION FOR SETTING UP SMTP SERVERS on either the iphone OR BB.

Sad, but true, i have recently switched to a BB 8820, after years on the windows based systems, it has been difficult.
