Hi

A friend gave me a BB 7230 that he received from his office... This was never really used as they all stuck with their Nokia Comunicators...

I am in the UK... The handset accepts any SIM card...

So my problem...

When I put a T-Mobile or Voda SIM in (Pay as you go and all I have tried)

When I go to dial out (Radio is on) I get the message ''Sorry Emergency calls are allowed'' If I dial 112 I get connected straight to Emergency This I do not want to keep doing...

I have read the User Guide... and I am still stumped...

Can anyone help ?

Sounds like it still has an IT Policy applied to it.

More info... It is a Telstra version (Austrailia, I think) Unlocked...

I have just downloaded and flashed the V4.0 SW, Handset looks good...

Now it shows full signal strength and, 'data connection refused' ?

Still Emergency calls only... How do I get this going ?

Data connection refused might mean it's locked, or the network your on doesn't have a GPRS roaming agreement with your carrier. I forget exactly how to do it, but if you search for "unlocked" or "unlocking" something along those lines, there is a procedure on how to tell if it's really unlocked or not.


Secondly, search for "IT Policy" for more info, but if he was on BES, they might have had a policy to limit the use of the phone. IT policies are not easy to get rid of without access to BES to clear it either. The short of it is, unless you can get someone with access to a policy.bin file or BES, it is next to impossible to clear the IT policy off the device.

I'll crack this yet ;) Just off the phone to Vodafone UK (PAYT) They are activating Blackberry data on the SIM... Can take up to 48hrs...

More weird stuff... Checked the IMEI with Voda (Not barred etc)...

Signal is great... But when I dial (One time only etc) It still comes up Emergency calls only ? Now if I put the jogwheel onto the Voda Icon and click... It will dial the Voda topup line with no probs... Why can the handset not dial from the Main screen ?

Ie The phone Icon ?

There's an option under the phone app to allow it to dial from homescreen.


I forget exactly where it was, maybe under one of the service books, but possibly under the security option of options, but you can see if an IT policy is applied to the device or not. They wouldn't really be able to tell by the IMEI.

Hi again bfrye... Thanks for your help do far... The IT Thing certainly seems to be an issue with other forum users... I've been trawling and searching for hours ;)

1. Call from Home is enabled....

2. The IT Policy bit... says.... IT Policy name: Default, Last updated Jul 13 2004
What does this mean... Remember this is a Aussie handset in the UK now...

3. Why can the handset call out only through the 'Vodafone' icon on the RIM

4. New Icon has appeared today ! 'Enterprise Activation' What is this ?

If you can or anyone answer these 4 ;)

Default policy means that one was applied. I would imagine that whomever had the device before you was on a company BES that had simply modified the "Default" policy to suit their needs. You will have to find a way to clear that policy before you can use the phone normally.
