Default used 8800 for rogers wireless

Hi I just picked up a used bb 8800 for rogers, and I am wondering what desktop version can I use on iy for the rogers network and what handheld version can I upgrade to.

Currently it has v.4.2.1.101

I am not putting the BB on a data plan, but am I still able to use BB Messenger

No, AFAIK, BB Messenger Requires a data plan -- although I have heard that SOMETIMES an email-only plan allows BB Messenger although I think that loophole may now be closed.
