Wink 8830 GPS now works!!!

Please Login to Remove!

I used BB maps and when I went to My Location it said sarching for satellites and it came up.. the Navigation also works, it showed 12 satellites, speed and direction. So far it will not work on Google Maps, but that part is on beta by google so there is a chance that it will work in the future.

I am running 4.5.0.77 beta

Whoa - you're right. I didn't even bother to install BB Maps on 4.5.0.101 until I saw your message, but I see 11 satellites in my home, and it seems to work. Did Verizon do something by accident maybe?

And I am glad there are - I wouldn't have seen this otherwise and this is great news IMO.

Does this mean you can now use Garmin on the 8830?

I think this is unique to BB Maps. Not sure. Try it.

I have an 8830 thru Verizon, and with VZ navigator. I installed BB Maps based on this thread. Unfortunately, nada.. BBMaps won't work. My OS is 4.2. Will I be required to upgrade? or do I just have to wait for Verizon to get around to my model?

WOW.. have I been lurking since April? LOL. My very first post!

It appears to be working on any OS 4.5 device 8130, 8330 and 8830 from Verizon--for BlackBerry Maps ONLY.

Thanks for the clarification JSanders. For the time being, I will keep my current OS and continue to do without a VZNavigator alternative. I have never run Beta anything.. so I will wait and continue to write nasty letters to Verizon. Been doing that for a while.

This is the case without running any beta OS on your phone, except in the case of the 8830 (since there is no released 4.5 for it as of yet).

you sure its the actual gps?
hit '0' to see my location. if it's within 1000 meters or so then it's using cell phone triangulation. It will also say waiting for GPS...

As in a meter? I have 101 as well on an 8830 and mine briefly says waiting for GPS, but after 5 seconds or so simply says that I am within some thousand meters.

Edit - I see you are on Alltel - isn't that going to be different than Verizon?

I would believe so but, here's the kicker. I have to start BBmaps first turn on GPS and then close it, then start google maps and immediately turn on GPS. It works perfect after that. I got 9 satellites 5 minutes ago.
