So I have service through AT&T network. I am on a family plan. I have an upgrade for my phone available. I talked to the people at an AT&T store and they said I would have to pay data plan each month if I bought it from them that day. Well, what if I just purchase one through a 3rd party distributor of AT&T off of the internet. Can I just get it through the mail, put my sim card in it, and have any data disabled through AT&T? Thanks in advance for your answers.. I really want this phone if I can wifi without data plan!!

well without a data plan why buy a blackberry ? get a reg phone

you can turn off data ... but i don't think wifi will work without it

Welcome to the forum. There are people who use BB without data plans, andd they like them -- but you have to be prepared for the limitations on the device that this will cause.

those limitations are only making calls and text messaging... yes you will be able to browse the internet with the wifi, but thats it... nothing else, nothing more... you want email, you have to wait till you connect to a wifi area and manual log into the providers website and look up email that way

Okay, this is exactly what I mean.. even the people here contradict each other.. I don't have to know every time I get an email.. I can check it myself.. but if I just get a "reg phone" as suggested, I will have to pay extra every month for internet.. That is why I just want to know if I will be able to disable data so I won't get charged for using the browser through wi-fi...

yes, you can disable it on the carriers end... ask them to add that into your account (even tho its not needed because you specifically need a BB data plan to get onto the internet via your carrier, no data plan no internet, the bb isn't like other phones where you can accidently go online and get charged... not possible with a BB)... and doing so WILL NOT stop you from getting on to wifi to browse the internet
