Which SIM card?

You'd think this would be in an FAQ or something, but after a quick search, I didn't find the answer to this question...

Just got my 8700C, upgrading from a 7290 with Cingular (obviously...). The 8700 shipped with its own SIM card. Should I use the one that was sent with the device, or take the one from my 7290? And why would I use one versus the other?

Thanks!

Old SIM card worked for me

I moved my SIM card from a 7100g over to the 8700c and all is working fine. I'm not sure what the difference is but if you switch to the new one, you'll probably need to call Cingular and have the account moved to the new chip.

fwiw, I've used the same SIM from my 6210 to 7210 to 7280 to 7290 to 7100g and now the 8700c. It just keeps on working thru the years.

id use the same sim card that is currently working if i were you...more than likely if you try to use the new one and cingular has to move your account over to the new sim they will screw something up in the process!

Same here. I just got my 8700 today and the cingular guy put my 7290 card in. I went on the BIS page, shot a new service book to the 8700 and it worked fine.

When I ordered my 8700 I was told that I will also get a new sim card. I asked about if I should use the old onr from my 7290 or the new one. I was told the new one is a 64K sim card and the old one is 32K and that both would work with no problem. I do not know what the difference is between the new and old sim other than one has twice the memory storage capacity. I am going to try the new one tonight when I setup the 8700 that was delivered today.

We received ours and ported the numbers from our 32k sims to the new 64k sims. It wasn't that difficult.

Wow, for some reason I received the new 3G SIM

The 64k I think will use Cingular and old At&t towers but this is what the guy in the store told me and they usually dont know all that much.

im using my old at&t sim from wayyyy back in the days with no problems!

I called and used the new sim they sent me and Cingular has screwed up my service since last wednesday. I have a brand new 8700 and no working sim card now. After 4 hours on the line with them they told me that in 3-5 days it would magically be fixed. Stay with your old sim card is my point. I want to cry

wow alcolepone, I'm sorry to hear Cingular screwed up your new unit. I just got mine today and took it to the local Cingular store. The tech told me that my 7290 which I had for just under 2 weeks had the new 64k card so he simply took the new SIM out of the 8700 and popped in the SIM in my 7290. Everything worked just fine. He told me just to hold on to the new one.

alcolepone 11-28-2005 05:52 PM

Yup, that's what I should have done myself. I love this device so much that I don't even mind it as a paper weight for now! Still better than a treo even without phone or email features. haha

How do you know it is the new 3G SIM? Are you experiencing any issues with not having the Browser?

It has a blue side that says "3G". I guess this one is the only that supports UTMS/HSPDA towers. The SIMS will be available Dec 1 (is my understanding), Of course, that won't help me,as the phone only supports EDGE right now.

I have no issues at all. Quite the opposite. I actually seem to get a bit better reception from that SIM as apposed to the standard 64K. Maybe phychological, but I will take it. Could have something about network tower selection??? Chicago is a UTMS 3G market. Who knows.

Seems like there are two schools of thought on this...anyone else have experiences they can post before I take this thing out of the box?
