Great GoogleMaps on 8700

Google Maps Mobile doesn't officially support the BlackBerry yet, but here's an excellent implementation of using it's database. It's called J2MEMap: http://j2memap.landspurg.net/index.html

Works great on the 8700 as well as some of the older BlackBerries. But I suspect we 8700 EDGE users will enjoy the experience much better.

HelloWorld Browser from www.freek.ca works really well.

...Just noticed it now supports GPS on 7520/7100i devices.

I am getting the same damn tunnel error message on this program as I do when trying to use Yak-On or Verichat - aarrrggghhhh!

jpmil 11-29-2005 11:02 AM

Tunnel Error

java.io.IOException: could not open tunnel - failed
Contexte:

Anyone know how to fix this?

richard371 11-29-2005 11:19 AM

I hit the space bar while in the map and got an exception error. I removed the app now.

Scooters 11-29-2005 09:18 PM

I cant get either map program to work on my 8700:

J2Me gives me a status not OK {502} error. Then there are no maps in the backgound "not available" in each quad of the screen.

I get NO IMAGE on the Hello Earth BES version.

I am on a BES.

Thoughts?

I installed the one with gps and it works. I looked up Cingular wireless in Austin Texas and it listed every store. I was amazed at that but it took around 25 seconds to load the images in different zones.

I have tried this several times and I get the "java.io.IDException could no open tunnel - failed Contexte:" error. I am downloading OTA, what exact link version did you install from? Did you do it OTA or via Apps loader on desktop software?

Downloaded it OTA. the tunnel error may be happening if you dont have the information in TCP listed as:
APN - isp.cingular
Username - [email address]
password - CINGULAR1

Do you have these in the TCP/ Advanced options menu?

singlemanriot 12-01-2005 01:12 AM

I added those settings as listed above and no dice. Same error, restarted the device, uninstalled and re-installed, no good. Im bummed this looks like a really cool app.

** Edit: Looks like I need the "Data Connect" added to my plan. Pretty pissed that I pay as much as I do per month and I have to pay for another additional service to use some apps, I know its $5 but the principal of it all.

J2MEMap on Blackberry

Dear all,

I am the programmer of J2MEMap... Two informations:

- I will do a faq for the blackberry version, as many of you haves the same issue (installation issue and connection issue) even if it's not related to the app itself, but to the Blackberry implementation and the way the data is managed.

- A new version will be released soon. I've tried to decrease memory usage which is a big issue on the Blackberry, and a lot of new interesting features, like waypoint for GPS version...I will post some screen shot, but I would be pleased to haves some betatester.... So drop me an email if you are interested to test it.
Best regards....

Mine are configured as described in one of Mark's guides with:
APN - wap.cingular
Username - [email address]
Password - CINGULAR1

I have the BB Unl plan and had to call and asked them to add the wap.cingular APN to my account.

Here is the betaversion, available in the download page (BetaVersion for BlackberryV0800.zip). Containts two version: one for GPS enabeld phone, the other for non GPS blackberries. http://j2memap.landspurg.net

Here is a snapshot of what it looks:

You can define a Waypoint, so it show the direction between you're current location and you're target location, as well as the distance....
for GPS, you can enable/disable the autotrack, even record you're track and send it to the server and get the data as a gpx file (but server part is not yet open)!
Interface needs oviously some rework, but that's a Beta!

Other new features included: some better shortcutr for blackberry, zoom in is 'i' or '+', zoom out is '-' or 'u', next is 'O' prev is 'p'... There might be some issue with keyboard mapping and so on, but testing is a nightmare with all the different defice for a part time project!
So enjoy, and feel free to provide me feedback

I just talked to Tech Suport. If you use the WAP.CINGULAR there is no extra charge. The isp.Cingular requires paying for data.

Still working to to get maps working

singlemanriot 12-01-2005 04:05 PM

So to clarify, TCP settings should be:
APN - wap.cingular.com
Username - [email address]
Password - CINGULAR1

Edit: Changed the settings to the ones above and it is working! Sweet.

I have HelloWorld Browser from www.freek.ca on my 8700c, works fine, at least it found my house :)

JordanA 12-01-2005 04:13 PM

Tomsoft (and others): I guess the logical question is - Is the 8700c GPS enabled?
