Default Interlace flicker?

Please Login to Remove!

I notice there is a very slight interlace scanline flicker when I stare at the screen and move my eyes or the Blackberry. I have noticed this on practicly every Blackbery and most color cellphones I have ever had. Maybe my eyes are to sensitive.

Interlace flicker used to drive me nuts. Time went by, and it wasn't a problem anymore. I figured the screens had improved. Years later, I spoke with a research engineer who had looked into the issue for IBM. He said the problem went away because I became older. Some people are more sensitive than others, but younger people are especially prone to the problem. Also, women generally tend to be more prone to it than men. It's too expensive to design a screen that will make everyone comfortable, so manufacturers try to accommodate as wide a range of sensitivities as possible, while keeping the costs down.

In other words, you may be just outside the manufacturers' sensitivity curve. Give it some time, and the problem may go away on its own.

It's also a lot more obvious at the periphery of your vision- you can see LEDs flicker, for example on many devices but only when in the edges of your vision because, I think, the rods in your eyes are more effective as opposed to the cones (color) at the edges.

A strange yet highly effective method to see this flicker is to make a vibration on the roof you your mouth by making a humming/buzzing noise with your tongue like when you were a child. The results are dramatic on many displays but you'll want to do this in a private setting to avoid embarassing situations!
