Can someone please tell me if you deactivate the status light, will it save the battery life any appreciable amount? Thanks!

Nope... It's just an LED. You could run a 3volt LED off 2 double A sized batterys for about a month or so; actualy did that once when bored.

If you're looking to save battery power, two big things: reduce the brightness of your display in Screen/Keyboard; leave the Bluetooth radio off as much as possible (since our lame-o Bluetooth doesn't do squat, anyway. Headset? Big deal!).
