Default Well, it happened. I dropped my 8700 [And it survived!]

Please Login to Remove!

last night from about 4 ft onto a hard ceramic tile floor. Could not find a scratch on it. I was worried because it did not seem as robust as my 7290, however, I dropped my 7290 several times and it was slightly scratched.

Excellent. And interesting, because in terms of feel, the 7290 seems more solid.

I dropped mine this morning too when I was removing it from the holster, only about 3 feet onto tile. No visible damage, but it hurts when it is less than 24 hours old and already battle worn ;)

Good news. I expect to drop my 8700 sooner or later.

RIM better had darn well drop-tested these units before releasing it to market.

Based on the "feel" of the 8700, I was completely surprised there was no scratching. My unit even slid accross the floor after it dropped.

I do see a small problem. The great thing with the 7290 is the black case. when it gets scratched you cant tell. I have had my 8700 for 2 days and already have a scratch right below the sym key. This sucks. When you have 100 or so temp blackberry's in the field and then get them back in with scratches its difficult to explain to the next person.. no there is nothing wrong with it.. its just scratched a little.

Wirelessly posted (Blackberry 8700: BlackBerry8700/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)

To me the 8700 is as durable as the 7250. Last night we went and bought our Christmas tree and as I was getting down from the top of my LR3 and my 8700 caught the lip of the roof rail and flew out of the holster and skidded across the parking lot payment. Received a few minor scratches but worked without issue. I was lucky to not receive anymore damage than I did.

I've dropped mine twice so far...and each time it was like time stood still as I watched it tumble to the floor and slide across the tiles on my kitchen floor. Seems to hold up pretty well...but I cant help but hate this new holster. You cant really tell if its in there or not without really straning to hear the click. Thats what I liked about the 7290 and my 6210, you knew when it was in the holster...

I dropped mine about a dozen times so far, plenty of scratches and nicks on the sides where it always happened to fall (on a corner or edge). One it went tumbling down 5 carpeted stairs here at the office when I tried to put it in my holster and missed. Still ticking.

Dropped my first unit (yes first unit, read on) while sitting down into a chair, the armrest caught the side of the holster and popped it out and it hit a ceramic floor as well. No visable scratches on it either...stood up REALLY well imho.

I swapped the original unit for a new one because after having it less than 24 hours it was constantly rebooting itself, multiple hardware level freezes (had to remove the battery to reboot, ctrl+cap+del didn't work), some jvm 523 errors, could not make outgoing calls at times (while friends could on the same network), bluetooth would crash the device so only wired headset would work, etc etc... basically i wasn't impressed. I put about 3 hours on the new one tonight and no problems so I figure something must have been seroiusly wrong with it...I almost wonder if at a hardware level....

If it is less than 30 days old, why wouldn't you just replace the whole thing?

He meant replacement 8700 units -- There are none in stock. There are 8700 shortages all over the place now...
