Hello everyone. I have been lurking around here for the last week listening to you discuss the 7130e, finally picked mine up yesterday. Thanks for all the (insolicitated) input.

I have been using the Verizon EVDO service for about 8 months with a pcmcia card on the laptop and love it. very fast, pretty reliable. The external antenna is nice. When the 7130e was announced I decided to move to the tethered phone option and save a device, but sacrifice a bit of laptop speed.

I purchased it yesterday and so far I love it. I had a small snag in provisioning, but they fixed that up within a couple of hours. I dont have email on it yet because the provisioning is still loopy. I cant login into the verizonwireless site to set it up. No biggy, I will call when they open.

The phone is light and easy to use, the screen is bright. I am concerned that the buttons feel a bit hmmm, light maybe? they just dont feel like they will take a lot of use. Thats just a feeling tho' and I am sure it can be attributed to the actual weight of the unit. The text input is rockin'! I have had no real issue with it. If it has a tough time with a word you can select partial words as you type, wery easy. It took about 15 minutes to get used to it.

I have never used a blackberry, but HAVE been on the recieving end, and the sound has always been bad. :( So I called my old cell with the blackberry and left voice mail. YUP, its horrid. BUT, when I use the motorola bluetooth headset it sounds pretty nice. So thats easy. I will say that I wish that my ears were more substantial, it feels like the unit is going to fall off. It hasnt.

Havent tethered it to the laptop yet, I will tonite and report back.

SMS on the unit is an absolute JOY!!!! YOU MEAN I CAN TYPE WHOLE WORDS!!! OOOHH, thats nice. SO much better than the old cell phone way. <sigh> Well, the old cell way DOES allow for words, but its so tedious that you are always using abbreviations.

Menus. ICK. Man, you seem like a bunch of nice guys (well, for the most part) but I gotta ask, ARE YOU HIGH? UHG, the menu system is a bit odd, but I am sure that I will learn to live with it.

So from a virgin BB user....
I give this bad boy two thumbs up. Sound quality is barely ok, but with the bluetooth headset it is good enough, the text input is super easy to get used to. The only downside is abuse, how much can it take? time will tell.

What specifically about the menus don't you like. There's the home screen where you can get to Mail, Phone, Contacts, Calendar. That's 99% of what you do. What isn't handy or intuitive?

its not the interface, the interface is fine. its more the menus when you press the click wheel, the menu that pops up on the right.

It just doesnt seem intuitive.

A case in point.
I can NOT add contacts to a group. In fact I cant create a group, I create a group called 'family' and I cant save it because I cant add any members, and you cant save it without members. I have tried (almost) everything, but I cant figure it out. I am a technology guy during the day so I should be able to figure it out, but cant. :(

I never did it before, so I clicked on Contacts off the home screen, clicked and selected New Group and gave it a name (Family) and pressed entered. Scolled down to where it said No Addresses, clicked and selected Add member from the listed and it brought up all my contacts I could then select.

Does that do what you want?

Click Save to save the changes. Groups are great for sending messages. Want to invite the family over for dinner? Compose a new message selecting the Family group.

Lets start over.

In the message screen, click trackwheel and select New Group. Name the group. Click trackwheel and add at least one contact to this group. Click Add Contact if you want more. Click trackwheel, select Save Group.

I also have a group named Family. Here's how I work with that group.

In Address Book screen I select Family from the entire list of contacts. It shows those in the group. To add/delete a contact fromthe group list, click trackwheel, select Edit Group.

In Edit Group screen, click trackwheel and the menu has Change, Delete, Add Member and SAVE. After you finish you have to click the Save option. Hope this make it clear on how to work with group lists.

but what I cant do is ADD
I click Add member
then I get a list of all contacts,
how do I select one? I highlite and click, i get a menu. which menu option do I select?
You are assuming that I can add a user because it is SO basic, but THATS what I cant figure out. :D

we have had ~8 posts on this menu issue, so GeekNJ THATS what I mean by hard to use menus. It shouldnt be this hard to add a member to a group.

One more time.

1.To create a new group, in Address Book screen click trackwheel, select New Group.
2. Name the group by typing the name, click Enter. Then click trackwheel, select Add Member.
3. From your list of contacts select the contact, click trackwheel and select Continue.
4. Click trackwheel, select Save Group.

5. To add more members to a group list, select the group in the Address Book, click trackwheel, click Edit Group.
6. Click trackwheel, select Add Member.
7. Select a contact, click trackwheel, select Continue.
8. To add more contacts, scroll to the Group Name at the top of the screen.
9. Click trackwheel and select Add Member, repeat step 7.
10. When finished, click trackwheel, select Save.

It takes time to become accustomed to a new navigation/interface. You should read the user guide found at Backberry.net under support.

** Menus may not be intuitive while consuming narcotics, specifically hallucinogens.

I get those too on my phone all the time and thought it was the Tmobile GSM service. Do you have a bad device or is this inherant to all BB?
