Question Slight seperation on bottom left - normal?

Please Login to Remove!

Like a couple people have mentioned in the Oh No! Dust... thread, my 8700 has a slight seperation on the bottom left, where as djp24 put it "you can see into the device, where you can basically see the keypad backlight"

I have this too, but its only visible from a certain angle - something to be worried about? I have included two photos, the first photo is taken straight ahead with the keyboard lit (you can see no separation), but the second photo is take at an angle - you can clearly see some light bleeding through. (It's more noticeable in the dark, obviously)

Normal or worth an exchange? Or am I being paranoid/OCD?

Other than this, the blackberry is amazing!

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried tightening the screws at all? I agree that it should not be that way, but if the unit is otherwise working well I would try that first before goint to exchange it, getting a new PIN number and running the chance of still having the same or new issues with the replacement.

Witz: My 8700c has the same seperation that you have indicated in your picture. I am personally not worried about it, I guess its 100% up to your comfort level.

After a closer inspection, the seperation on mine seems to be a plastic molding issue, as if I squeeze the top and the bottom a little, it still doesn't remove the gap. So this indicates that the plastic was designed/cut incorrectly.

Does not bother me too much - wanted to make sure I didn't have something defective. A little reluctant to "tighten screws"...

This is my first blackberry, I returned the treo 650 (great design, too much pda for me) - I love it. Too expensive, but I love it...

Hopefully someone will make a skin/condom/wrap for it soon.

Mine has it too but then look at the hole where you plug in a headset or the gap around the track wheel. If you think that might be a source of dust getting in the other gaps/hole I mentioned are much larger and far more likely to be a source of dust.

Inconsistant parts. Part of the reason why some battery doors are loose and some tight. RIM must have changed companies to MFG their new Blackberry 71XX and 8700 models.

Generally poor build quality on the 8700 IMO. Rim is making a tons of $$$ as they have lowered the cost of manufacturing these things...this has to be the worst build quality on any product that they have introduced to date. While they have made many advances technologically speaking, overall QC just is not there...just my .02 worth

Default Speaking of the speaker

On the bottom left - isn't that small hole the speaker for the phone? I am confused. In terms of general build quality, mine seems much better than the 7100 and almost the same as my 7280 except for the strength of the case. I have no complaints here.

If that is what they are referring to...yes, I thought they were referring to the joint on the side of the case, but I still stand by my earlier opinion. Screen scratches just by looking at it, collects dust...generally cheap feel on the keyboard and RIM will charge you up the wazoo to change the case just to fix a scratched screen, which is due to their poor design, IMO. This feels like the iPOD nano crap all over again with this ridiculously delicate screen and it is costing Aple money to resolve that one too.

Default Size vs recessed screen

No doubt that they didn't recess the screen to make the size less wide. I think this one definitely calls for screen protectors. I have not taken my original one off yet until I get some others. The balance of mine feels pretty darn solid. With a leather OEM case, soon I hope, I think it will stand up quite well.

Mine has the same thing. It bothered me at first but I try not to think about it.

As others have said, if I exchange it, I'll have to deal with the PIN issue and the chance that I get another one the same or one that has worse speaker, display, etc.

Mine is the same. I'm not worried. It's hardly noticable. Take a look at your TV, DVD player, Cable box, computer, house, car (except Honda) and look to see how many you find that don't fit together perfectly. I think it's the nature of mass production.

Like many others have said, take the 7290, insert the 8700 display, add EDGE, new processor & other guts, and it would be perfect. (keeping the black case, of course)

Mine also has this issue. I opened the battery door and tightened the 3 torx-6 screws to no avail. Still separated around the bottom, so that light from the keys leaks out. I'll take my chances with this one as opposed to getting one with separation around the display.

I figure the lesser of two evils until T-Mo gets their own 8700, at which time I'll sell this one in hopes that the newer models are trouble-free.

Mine has this too, doesn't bother me. Is there any difference between the Cingular and Rogers case other than color? I have a Cingular.
