I just bought a used 8703e and decided I should run current software on it so I went thru the process described to download 4.5 and install. It downloaded and did the PC install but when I started Desktop Manager (5.0) and ran Application Loader it said there was nothing to update.

My BB is at 4.2.1.110 so I suspect it does need the update to 4.5

Any suggestions on what I should check or do to figure out why it can't find the update?

Did you locate and delete VENDOR.XML from your PCs C: drive?

I hadn't done that (didn't see that in the instructions that I read). But I have since done so and it still says "No software update is required for your device."

You are supposed to delete vendor.xml beforeyou install the update jpullam... you could possibly try repeating the process, now that you have removed this file.

Um, no - you can delete it at any time david. In fact, you have to delete it AFTER you download and install a new version of the handheld OS.

Thank you: I admit to doing this for the first time an hour or so ago, and deleted my vendor.xml file before running the update (as stated in the instructions at the top of this forum)

It works in both instances (at least sometimes) I am guessing....

edit: To clarify, I deleted vendor.xml file before running loader.exe

I did a repair and reinstall of the 4.5 on the PC side, then deleted the vendor.xml file, then tried the load again. Same message "No software update is required."

Guess I'm outta luck. Any other ideas or am I stuck on this level?

Are you certain you're downloading and installing the right software for the 8703?
What's the name of the file you are using?

Fascinating ... after giving up on this, I was informed that there was an update available for the BB Desktop manager (5.0.1) so I let it run.

And the next time I had a fresh start on that and had my BB connected it also recognized that there was a 4.5 update for the handheld. So I guess the problem may have been that 5.0.0 was not letting the handheld update through.

I haven't run it yet, but plan to try shortly.

What OS are you running on your PC?

I run Windows XP, very highly maintained and reliable.

I am on 4.5 now and the only problem so far is the battery guage always at 100%. I gather others have that problem too. Hope that one is fixed soon.

I had the 8703e for about 9 months and that was the best blackberry i ever had. it went through so much & then i lost it :[ it was a depressing day.

If it's the best, I can't imagine what the worst BB must be like! This software is flaky and the battery life sucks. I don't know why so many people think these things are good ... maybe they don't have very high standards.
