| Blackberry Attachment Service not installed Please Login to Remove! I have a blackberry here that is having an issue with opening attachments. After much research, I found out the problem is that the Blackberry Attachment Service is not installed on the unit. It seems to have been happening since the user upgraded his firmware.
I've done a lot of research and it's suppose to be simple (I think). All you have to do is open Blackberry Manager, go to application loader and check off Blackberry Attachment Service. The problem is that when I do that, there is no application called that to check off or select. I've tried a few different computers and none of them have that as an option. Any ideas? | | Offline

| You will need to have the OS of the device installed on the computer you attach it to. Otherwise, as you've noticed, you will not have the ability to do so.
You can find the OS for the correct device stickied at the top of the forum.

| attachments problem hi - i am having the same problem on a new bold 9700. I cannot open attachments. If i go to Options, Advanced Options then i have nothing listed as "applications" where i think this attachment service is supposed to be. There is no option for adding it under Blackberry DesktopManager. A previous response to what looks like the same problem suggests that i need to have the BB OS on my desktop? Can someone please advise where i get this, where i install it and what i then do? would be hugely appreciated | | Offline

| Hi - many thanks.
I`ve now done all this and not one tiny jot has changed.
when i ran the loader.exe i quickly got a list of applications to add or delete - there was nothing that looked like it was associated with attachments (or was called "attachment service") and everything else i need was already checked. If i clicked NEXT the program told me no further action was needed so i, instead, opted to use it to wipe and re-install all apps. When the phone came back up i see absolutely no difference. It says it is running v5.0.0.321 (platform 5.1.0.90). | | Offline

| How did you wipe it?
When did you install 5.0? If you have 5.0 installed on your device, you must have installed it to your PC at some point. Something's not adding up here.

| well, i know its driving me up the wall.
After deleting the vendor file, downloading and running the install of the latest BB OS software (following the link in this thread), i ran the loader.exe with the results i stated (there was no attachment-related software evident). Shall i just completely wipe the phone somehow? I am not sure quite whats going wrong | | Offline

| I thought you said you already wiped it?
Also, when did you upgrade to 5.0? When did this issue start? You're leaving out some details...

| Hi sorry - it is difficult to know how much detail you need.
The 9700 is a week old and has been continually crashing with the error code: 525 despite the fact that the ONLY "third party" app was the Blackberry App World. During this nightmare i re-installed the OS several times following a variety of forum threads. The phone has been stable now for 48 hours but won`t open attachments (it never did even straight out of the box). I have also had a JVM error:529 a few hours ago.
Does that history tell you anything? Is the phone showing signs of being inherently unstable or can i somehow scrub it back to its bare bones and start again? | | Offline

| Well if you installed the OS several times, then you should have already had the OS installed on your PC, so you didn't need to download the one posted above.
Here is what I recommend.
Backup your device.
Wipe the device completely : How do I wipe the BlackBerry using Jl Cmder? - BlackBerryFAQ
Remove any OS you have installed on your PC by going through Add/Remove Programs.
Once they're all removed, download and install the one listed above.
Load that OS and make sure to check all the boxes that you want installed.
Once it's loaded, then restore your data.
See if that helps.

| I just took a quick screen shot for an 8830 loading 4.5. See the attachment. It should look pretty similar.

| Hi - many thanks, you`ve been very helpful. I`ve just spend the last 4 hours on this solid as follows:
1. I deleted all BB operating system software from my desktop
2. I ran JMCinder, wiped the unit and got the white screen with "reload software 507"
3. I downloaded the most up to date operating system software from the link above (143 Mb file), and ran the executable once saved to my hard drive with the phone plugged into a USB. I got "successfully installed"
4. I opened the DM software - it initially says it "cannot connect". I then click on "update". I get an update summary as follows:
Blackberry 5.0.0 system software
Blackberry core apps 5.0.0
Browser 5.0.0
Email setup app 5.0.0.
Phone 5.0.0.
The software then downloaded 331 modules saying "loading operation successful" after about ten minutes
I unplugged the phone from my desktop and couldn`t see anything different under Options, Advanced Options
I plugged it back in and ran DM, Application Loader and, guess what, after all this THERE IS STILL NO ATTACHMENT SERVICE OPTION!!! After 4 hours!!
Just give up and return the phone now??? | | Offline

| Hi - you were quite right sorry. BUT, i have just repeated the process with the exact same result. There is definitely no OS on the desktop when i start it (ie start downloading from the link above). The only BB software on the desktop at this point is device manager and BBmedia syc - do these also need to be scrubbed off before reinstalling the OS? | | Offline

| Go into DM and click on Help > About BlackBerry Desktop Manager and then click on the Device Software tab. What's listed there?

| Hi again. sorry for being such a pain.
There are 3 tabs: General, Component and Device Software. I can`t copy/paste the contents - is there something specific i should/should not see?
No mention of anything "attachment related" under either.
I have found out that i can open attached word.doc files BUT not docx or pdfs. | | Offline

| Under device software, it will list what device software you have installed on your PC.
What OS are you currently running on your device? Do you have Docs To Go on your device?
