When I plug my 7130e into a USB port on my laptop, it charges the phone, very nice. But when I plug the 7130e into a powered usb port on my inverter, it doesnt charge. I know that this powered usb port on the inverter works because I use it to charge my iPod (and other USB toys). As well, I just plugged the phone into a friends laptop and told it to cancel when it found new hardware, and it didnt charge. So that implies that you have to have software installed to USB charge? bummer.

Does anyone know if this is a setting that can be changed on the phone? So that I can charge it off of a powered usb port without a computer.

I think you can search the forum and find your answer, but I have read here in other threads that the Desktop Manager had to be installed on the PC in order to charge the BB.

That said, I charge my BB at a client's site on their PC all the time and there is no BB software installed on the PC. I don't see anything at all, but maybe and just maybe it is because the client has a BES running somewhere?

I do not get the "new hardware recognized" prompt when I connect the USB, but I do see the charging symbol on the BB and it does work (7290 & 8700).

It will trickle charge without the Desktop Manager/Drivers.

At minimum,,It's gotta see the drivers....which you can install separately from the Desktop Manager.

I believe the BB drivers are part of Windows XP-SP2. At least when I've plugged my BB in on laptops w/o the desktop manager, it finds the hardware and installs.

The answer is to purchase a BB charger for the car, either the car charger or the AC charger plugged into the inverter. Nothing else is certain.

I've found that on some Belkin self powered USB hubs you need to move the switch from BUS to SELF for the BB, and some other USB connected devices, to charge properly.
