Default 8700 Purchase on Amazon

Please Login to Remove!

Hi All,

Is there any disadvantages to buying a phone through Amazon.com? I was just looking at the 8700 on their site and see that its listed for $149.99!

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...nce&s=wireless

Just wondering if anybody has ever bought a phone on amazon...any help would be appreciated!

I recall someone noting that you actually pay full price and then get the difference back after being on contract for 6 months or more-- and they get to keep you money until that time.

Hmm, thats not too outlandish. I'm leaning toward doing this, seems like a good deal unless someone has seen a better one?

Yep ... same deal. Very cheap deals but you will not see the money for a long time.

Default Placed an order with Amazon on November 23 . . .

on the first day it was available to order on their site. At the time I placed the order, there was no "available in 4 to 5 weeks" notice. That notice showed up about two weeks ago. Ever since Cingular approved my credit for service (November 25), the order status has said delivery was expected Dec. 1 through 8. Today is the 8th, and the order status page still says the same thing, but also indicates the phone still has not been shipped.

When I called Amazon for info about a week ago (because the December 8 outside delivery date on the order status page seemed inconsistent with 4 to 5 week availability in the actual Amazon store), the people who I spoke with claimed to have no way to determine whether the phone was actually in inventory. Since I was calling prior to the December 8 delivery date on the order status page, they just kept telling me that according to their system, I would have the phone by December 8.

I have no idea whether Amazon has any of these phones in stock. I suspect they have not received any phones from Cingular, and the probably have no idea when to expect the phones.

I have difficulty justifying purchasing the phone from Cingular directly, since it is like throwing away the $150 rebate I could get by being patient. But the lack of any real info from Amazon is frustrating. The number they give for their "Cell Phone Specialists" connects you with people who don't even know if phones are in stock.

Default Update

After posting the message above, I again called Amazon since my delivery date had come with no phone shipped. This time the (much more helpful) customer service person told me that Amazon has NOT had any 8700s in stock yet, and does not know when -- or even if -- they will actually get these phones. He said it is possible this is a phone Amazon will not be able to get for some reason.

So if you place an order with Amazon, be aware the 4 to 5 week availability is merely a guess as of today, and you may in fact never see an 8700 delivered by Amazon.

Well, 6 months from now there may be a price reduction and there will be plenty of stock everywhere. If you want one now, gotta pay the man!

Yeah, I might just do that. I dished up $300 for the 7130e, if I trade that in, its a straight trade I guess.

I have had an order on Amazon for the 8700 and another phone (Nokia 9300) since early October. Nothing has shipped. There's no harm keeping the unit on order there since they contact you to see if you want it before they actually ship it. However, don't hold your breath. You're never going to see it. I cancelled my order today because I knew that I'd just forget the order was out there and end up hearing from them 4 or 5 months from now to see if I still want the unit. Don't waste your time and energy.

Thanks guys - i will NOT be ordering through amazon. Strange that they post it on their website when they don't seem to know when they will be receiving it.

Umm. Guys, this is AMAZON. It's not some mom-n-pop place. It's the biggest retailer on the net. Top sellers on amazon move stock prices, for pete's sake. If they don't get them, who will? Of course they'll get them. This seems like it's the hangover from Cingular's unbelievably botched roll-out of this machine.

That being said, I want to clear up some misconceptions about getting a phone from amazon - first, you don't need to wait 6 months for your rebate. That's the policy of places that are associated with inphonic (e.g., wirefly, best buy). Amazon's rebates are just like normal rebates. They take a couple months to process. There are some caveats to watch out for - like don't cancel your service within 6 months.

I've ordered 3 phones from amazon over the past couple of years. During those times, I MADE a couple hundred $$ in rebates. And they didn't take any longer to process than the rebates for the blank CDs I bought last year.

Now, will I order my 8700 from amazon? I don't know because I'm an immediate gratification kind of guy and my cingular store down the street has them. But is it worth $150? Dunno....
